Tubes!!!!

I'm retubing my amp, and have no idea what tubes to buy. I'm looking for a full rich tone with sparkling highs and thumping lows. I'm only replacing the power tubes. The amp is a 1967 Fender Bassman.

What I always say when this subject comes along:

Talk to Doug at www.dougstubes.com He has a knack for picking out just the right tube to match the amp for the sound desired. WOW....I've said that in alot of tube related threads but it's true!

Trust wahwah on the power tubes for sure!

I have Winged C SED 6L6's in my 69 twin reverb and I got B Bent to pit a set in his Vibrolux reverb and we both love them!

If it were my amp I'd go with the Winged C SED power tubes and the reissue Tung Sol 12AX7's...

I would roll with TAD labeled Shuguangs myself, not nearly as stiff, nice and smooth on the top, with good clarity. It also is not too hard to track down some good prices on the real deal. My 68 Bassman really got into the good stuff when I put the RCAs in it.

Oh yeah, kevlar3000 is absolutely correct. If you are prepared to track down some blackplate 50's RCA's, or even the grey plate 60's RCA's your amp will never have sounded so good. In fact, the blackplates would be superior to what came in the amp when it was new!

Well a lot of their stuff is just re-branded JJ stuff from what I understand(Tesla factory in Czeck republick). Usually, JJs get no love from you typa crowd.

Or sovtek, or that shugang Chinese stuff.. GT is usually rebranded and repriced (more expensive) mediocre tubes.

I don't mind JJ power tubes...though they're not my first choice.

No love at all for JJ preamp tubes! :thumbsdow

In my Splawn? After much tweaking I got it dialed in exactly where I want it (at the moment!) and never bothered with swapping any poweramp tubes. I've got a quad of KT-77's laying around I'll try someday....I'm happy with the way it sounds at the moment though.....

one of my favorite new tubes is the groove tubes 6L6ge
ive tried the tad 6l6wgc-str next to them and they are both good tubes but i can get the ge's for the same price or less.

i indeed like JJ's very much in preamp section.

@The Kernel: mind that you retube a bassman and metlking sounds to me
like somebody playing metal, right?
so your preferences may be totally different. you can't go wrong if you email
to tad, they will sure give you a good recommendation, but it may be an
overpriced solution.

I understand your reasons for thinking that......the label "Metal" however is subject to one's interpretation these days. Metal to me is Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath....old school metal before the days of "way too much gain" that sucks all the real tone right out of a guitar! My ideal tones are hot-rodded JCM800 Marshalls type.....like my Splawn Quickrod!

Check out some TUNG-SOL re-issue 12AX7's if you get the chance.....they just "do it" for me!
