Tuner pedals

Anyone have any thoughts regarding the Sonic Research Turbo Tuner and how it compares the the Peterson Strobo Stomp Classic? They both have high precision which I find intriguing.

Re: Tuner pedals

I switched to the TC clip on and have never looked back.
It's nice with my old diabetic eyes to have it right there on the headstock.

Re: Tuner pedals

ive got a pedaltuner, but i use clipons at gigs. they work well and are about as "true bypass" as you can get.
those little planet waves ones are great. Small enough to leave on the axe 24/7

Re: Tuner pedals

I hate the clip on tuners but I can see why people like them. I much prefer a Pedal Tuner. You can't go wrong with Boss Tuners.

Only supposedly "true" strobe tuner I own is the discontinued Planet Waves pedal tuner. I got it for 30 or 40 bucks when they were discontinued but I don't use it on the board. They had a reputation for the screen going out. I figured I'd use it for intonation but I haven't done anything more than mess around with it. I use a TC Polytune 2 on the board and I end up intonating with it as well. Not strobe accurate but good enough for me.

I almost took a flyer and bought the Sonic Research but I think they were out of stock at the time. So, I ended up with the TC. If the specs are true, the TC isn't as accurate but it's accurate enough. I don't think I could use a true strobe tuner on the board, so I don't really regret not getting the Sonic Research. But that's just me.

Re: Tuner pedals

I like the Korg Pitchblack because I can see it from a mile away in the dark. (It's on my board). It seems like a decent enough tuner and is well-built.

Re: Tuner pedals

I have the ST200, don't use it on my board anymore. I like it for doing setup work on the guitar, live i don't find the need to have it around anymore. The rotating display i prefer over the Peterson's tetris style rearrangment pattern. The turbo display isn't very clear under bright overhead sunlight.

I prefer the clip on planet waves micro tuner, one less pedal & it stays out of the way but i play a strat style git so the headstock helps in keeping it away from coming off or knocking out of place.

Re: Tuner pedals

Long time TU-2 user here, owned mine since 2008 I think and still going strong. Also have a Polytune and that's pretty accurate. Pedal tuners for live stuff all the way.

Re: Tuner pedals

I don't want to incur the wrath of Gainstage, but I've had a Boss TU-2 since about as long as I've been playing guitar, and I've only thought about replacing it a time or two in that decade or more. Still the first stomp I make immediately after I switch on the amplifier.

TU-2 here as well, until it died. Didn't want a used 2. There were some new 2's still around on ebay and such but prices were jacked up. There were some mixed reviews on the 3 from former 2 owners so with that and the true bypass of the TC, I bought the TC. No regrets.

TC Electronics pedals are awesome. No argument from me. Hope it works great for you.

Re: Tuner pedals

Most pedals are fine on a dark stage, but a lot of them can't be seen in sunlight. That was my reason for upgrading from a TU-2 to the -3. The -3 is more accurate, and thus can be a little "tinkier" to work with.

The Turbo Tuner has a great rep as an accurate, easy-to-read tuner, as are the Peterson Stomps. I keep my Peterson for my set-ups; my original blue model is a bit fragile for live use, IMHO. I was using a Boss TU-12H, and the accuracy difference is significant. I also have a couple of Korg CA-30s around, an they are very good, but can be hard to read. I keep these in the cases of of acoustics, and used one with a contact mic on my banjo. Having used these little Korgs, I'd have no qualms about using a Pitch Black.

But these days the clip-ons rule. I have some of the Snark Super Tights, and no complaints at all. Not all clip-ons are created equal, so check the specs, and make sure it has an easy-to-read display.

Good luck!

And don't forget to add a tuner app to your smart phone. I use the G-String on my Android, and it makes guitar shopping MUCH easier!

I keep hearing about these cool apps but I'm a cell phone moron. And I've had one since the 80's when they were big things with the handpiece tethered to a box with a curly cord. And expensive to make calls. I was a sub and i had to phone jobs in and respond to pages it was more efficient than finding a pay phone 12 times a day. Always just used them for talking ... And now email and texting when I have to.

Now you have all kinds of apps. I just learned a couple months ago that TC has these beam me up Scotty features for changing sounds in some of their pedals using your cell phone. It was strange enough when TC sent me a link to a firmware update for the Polytune to fix a noise on bypass issue.

I'm a freaking dinosaur.

Re: Tuner pedals

About the ones in your question, I have no experience with them. Other than that, I use both clip-ons and pedals, they both have their functions. Anyway, yesterday during a super hot late afternoon they had no any use as the sun killed their lights completely. It did not matter as the adjust screws on my fixed Floyd got so hot that they stuck to their chassis and I could not move them anyway.

Re: Tuner pedals

I have PitchLab app on my android. I like it, its got various screens available showing different animations for tuning. Accurate enough too.

Re: Tuner pedals

I wish there was a small tuner pedal with back-jacks. My Korg PitchBlack+ has back-jacks but it's too big. T-Rex makes the TuneMaster that has back-jacks, but it has the power on the side (terrible)! Guyatone actually has a tuner with back-jacks that is small, but I don't think it has true bypass. I'm not that much of a true bypass snob, but I think I would prefer to have a buffered pedal further down the chain, because dirt pedals don't always like buffered bypasses (especially ZVex).

Seymour Duncan should make a small tuner pedal, since their current line-up of pedals are small with back-jacks.

Re: Tuner pedals

I have a snark
It works fine on most of my guitars but on my new epiphone
It just sux

Horrible
I depend on on the tuner on my GNX pedal
