Tuners

My 2016 Epi LP P90s came with crap tuners (hex) that spin around. I'm looking at Schaller M6A Tuners $59.95. MF says no hole drilling, but they didn't sound too sure to me. One review from a Gibson had to drill holes. Ehd? Anyone? This is a ton of money for me, and half the price of the guitar, but I like it.

Re: Tuners

If the stock tuners are the ones I'm thinking about (top and bottom mounting screws), I have a feeling that the mounting tab hole in the Schaller wont line up with the stock hole. The peghole may also need to be enlarged. But I could very well be wrong.

I really don't wanna do that. You know, they're the same hexagonal tuners on all $99 guitars. Same as what comes on Squier Strat. Someday I have to fix those too, but they're not fkn up like these. If you knew my house. . . I can actually SEE the drill, but the bits. . . {sigh}
Can you think of some cheaper tuners, or one that might fit?

Re: Tuners

I have an Epiphone Special I P90 that turned out to be a great little guitar for $99… That is AFTER I upgraded the bridge and tuners. I got both of them from GuitarFetish and have been EXTREMELY pleased with how this guitar works after the upgrades.

Tuners:

Both items are also available in black and in Chrome. I should add that I DID have to drill out the tuner holes slightly to get these tuners to fit, but hey… it’s a $99 guitar, right?

That's really weird. Mine is shaped totally different than yours. It's double cut of course, but they're symmetrical. Smaller top, same cuts on top and bottom, and larger bottom. And I like my bridge. Maybe change pots someday. . .

I LOVE that guitar.
I wish I could remember how I put pictures in attachments. I think if you go to MF, and look up the TV yellow one it might look like it. I just remembered it said gloss, and this is matte, so forget that. I'll see if I already have pic in my stuff.
Anyway, you only had to drill a little on the back, or what? The Gibson review guy said top and bottom. Screw that (unintended!!)

Yours is 2015? Mine is 2016. Maybe why different cut. I always screw up posts. Ask anybody. I guess I'm not forumized yet. These guys are so patient. So, what tuners did you buy?

Re: Tuners

If you do have to enlarge the tuner holes, I strongly suggest using a hand reamer, not a drill press.

Re: Tuners

OK. Unless someone screams NOOOOOOOO I'm going with the Grovers @ MF

not

I'm searching for a nickel set of Fender Deluxe Locking tuners for my Strat. I'll offer exchange of the stock tuners as part payment if anyone is interested.

Another thing to consider is the gear ratio on the tuners, you may or may not prefer a higher ratio, I myself actually enjoy low ratio tuners.

I'm buying some Grovers for $44. Have spent all day looking for something cheap but not cheap. That's why I was laughing. I have the same stock crap on my Epi and Fender. They're so bad they're slipping on the Epi. I'm sick of it. Don't ask these guys, they'll tell you to buy some $60 this or that. I found a few cheaper than the Grovers, but I drew the line there-you get what you pay for. Sometimes. I think they're 1:12. I don't know I looked at so many all day I got a headache.

No I'm not.

Neil Young said Jimi and JJ Cale were the 2 most imp. guitarists of our time.

Re: Tuners

I'm actually looking for new tuners because I want them staggered and locking, not because the stock ones are bad. It's from an MIM Standard and they are pretty solid.

I got exactly the set I sent you the link for (the gold Sperzel-style for $36.95). I have these tuners on most of my electric guitars now and they work very smoothly and are rock solid. I really like the locking tuners because the make string changes and “stretch-in” time so quick.
