Re: Tuners

OK. Unless someone screams NOOOOOOOO I'm going with the Grovers @ MF

Be aware that Grovers are not what they used to be. They used to be awesome; now they are pretty poor quality in the grand scheme of things. I'm not sure exactly when the quality dropped, but it was definitely over 15 years ago, and maybe 20. They'll likely be better than your stock tuners, but they won't be "great" copared to many other options. I prefer Sperzels, Hipshots, Waverlys, and Gotohs to today's Grovers...and I'm almost certain that Gotoh makes a drop in tuner that will require no reaming of your guitar. Gotoh is my go-to (I love how well they drop in so seamlessly, how stock they look, how many options they are offered with, their awesome "almost invisible" locking system, and their height-adjustable posts), followed by Hipshot, and then Sperzel. (I always custom order directly from the company when buying Sperzels, so I can get the nickel finish with small buttons, which look way better than the standard large buttons IMO).

Re: Tuners

Educate me: staggered?

The tuner posts aren't all the same height; they're intended for non-angled headstocks like most Fenders. It allows sufficient downward pressure between the tuner post and the nut without using a string tree.

Re: Tuners

Take a look at this picture. See how the shafts of the tuners get shorter as you near the end of the headstock? It helps maintain a nice break angle across the nut... particularly on straight headstocks.

Thanks! I've been looking at Gotohs. Didn't know that about Grovers.

Re: Tuners

They don't make a staggered 3x3 set for LPs
Cuz it's ridiculous
Why would one want to mimic a tilt back headstock
On a tilt back headstock

Re: Tuners

Tuners are overrated i have a tele Affinity and a Epi special II that stay in perfect tune as any of gibson or usa fender i have owned! stretch the mothers f.. ers out!!!!!!! i do no fancy stringing just stick it threw the hole and wind it nicely! fret a couple notes in different places on the neck and stretch each string boom all set

Re: Tuners

I didn't look at these yet coz I gotta go, but Euh, can I put staggered locking tuners on the LP? I think it would look cool.

I wouldn't put staggered tuners on a tilt-back headstock because too much downward pressure at the nut could make it bind.

I agree that in most cases tuning issues are caused by the nut instead of tuners, but sometimes tuners are worn or defective and need to be replaced. The 'Gibson Deluxe' tuners that came on my SG Standard never seemed to hold tune all that well, and I discovered that the posts wobbled upon closer inspection. I replaced them with a set of Gotoh tuners and it's much more stable now. The original Kluson tuners in the 50s and 60s were notorious for gear slippage because they were made of substandard material on the 'wrong' equipment in order to cut production costs.

Re: Tuners

If your guitar can take grovers, it should be able to fit the Hipshot tuners easily. The universal mount plate makes installs easy and best of all, zero drilling. They're 10mm holes if I recall correctly.

That's what I was worried about, but I guess it's a moot issue. Thanks dude.

They don't have to be Hipshot great. It's only me and chromatics. Evil Demanic.

Re: Tuners

I got exactly the set I sent you the link for (the gold Sperzel-style for $36.95). I have these tuners on most of my electric guitars now and they work very smoothly and are rock solid. I really like the locking tuners because the make string changes and “stretch-in” time so quick.
Sperzel-style?

Re: Tuners

But what about "IF it's as good as, buy the real thing"?

I have a family of seven (wife, 3 kids, and 2 grandkids) which I support as the only income... I see no reason whatsoever to spend extra for the “real thing” when I’ve had great results from the knockoff... ESPECIALLY on a $99 guitar.
