Re: Tuners

didnt you say you had a budget

didnt want spend as much as the guitar on tuners

suit yourself
its your money

Ehd, are you trying to help keep me sensible? Thanks need all the help I can get. No, that comment didn't mean I was gonna go buy Hipshots or something. I was just wondering at the response to that post I read. Makes sense if you're rich, or possessed. I'm gonna get some Gotohs, I believe. Now, your opinion on locking v non tuners?
Fortunately, another friend told me I was a fool about getting strap locks. Actually, about 3. Maybe you were one!

Didn't know Gotohs were 60K also. I can't find anything anywhere. I'm gonna get my drill and Oscar's Millermatic and make my own, like we did in Boy Scouts.

Re: Tuners

Locking tuners are faster and easier to change strings on, especially if you don't know how to properly wrap the strings around the post. I have another post on this forum about Planet Wave locking tuners that cut the strings for you.

Re: Tuners

I'm buying some Grovers for $44. Have spent all day looking for something cheap but not cheap. That's why I was laughing. I have the same stock crap on my Epi and Fender. They're so bad they're slipping on the Epi. I'm sick of it. Don't ask these guys, they'll tell you to buy some $60 this or that. I found a few cheaper than the Grovers, but I drew the line there-you get what you pay for. Sometimes. I think they're 1:12. I don't know I looked at so many all day I got a headache.

No I'm not.

I can’t speak to the Epi, but I can tell you that the Grover’s will fit Gibson holes —100%.
Gibson tuning peg holes are 10mm....I’m not sure about Epiphone though.

Re: Tuners

Be aware that Grovers are not what they used to be. They used to be awesome; now they are pretty poor quality in the grand scheme of things. I'm not sure exactly when the quality dropped, but it was definitely over 15 years ago, and maybe 20. They'll likely be better than your stock tuners, but they won't be "great" copared to many other options. I prefer Sperzels, Hipshots, Waverlys, and Gotohs to today's Grovers...and I'm almost certain that Gotoh makes a drop in tuner that will require no reaming of your guitar. Gotoh is my go-to (I love how well they drop in so seamlessly, how stock they look, how many options they are offered with, their awesome "almost invisible" locking system, and their height-adjustable posts), followed by Hipshot, and then Sperzel. (I always custom order directly from the company when buying Sperzels, so I can get the nickel finish with small buttons, which look way better than the standard large buttons IMO).

I have Grover locking tuners in 2 guitars and they work great in both. One came stock with them and one I installed.
Maybe QC has improved over the years?

Lots of Epiphones have Grovers installed from the factory. But, I think, the "economy" machines on the cheap Epi's have a smaller peghole.

Cool.

Re: Tuners

If the stock tuners are the ones I'm thinking about (top and bottom mounting screws), I have a feeling that the mounting tab hole in the Schaller wont line up with the stock hole. The peghole may also need to be enlarged. But I could very well be wrong.
Yeah, I think Epi's are 8mm, maybe

The issue was not quality control, just quality. They used to be extremely well-made tuners back in the '70's, etc. Those were on a different planet compared to how they are made today.

They are still better than the worst cheapo tuners. I have several sets of Grovers on my guitars, just because they have come to me in various ways. I *will* use them…but there are much better made tuners out there, which I prefer.

Re: Tuners

The reason I said hipshots is because they are easily fit and dont require drilling. I know they are a little pricier, but if you dont wanna drill?

Yeah, I seem to remember reading somewhere that the import models had a different diameter hole...
I have a 2015 LP Special that has the horrendous G-Force doo-hickey. I went with the locking Grovers and haven’t had any issue. But just wasn’t 100% about the Epi.

Re: Tuners

Thanks! Take all the help I can get. Just found out Gotohs are $60 too! WTF??? Probably didn't fit, EITHER

You can get Gotoh 16:1 machines for $34. They go in a 10mm peghole and you'll probably have to drill new holes for the mounting tab. Want to get fancier, the price goes up. But those Gotohs are solid.

For $58 you can get the Hipshots which come with the mounting plates so you don't have to worry about the old mounting holes. But you still have to enlarge the pegholes. I think they are also 10mm. It's only a few bucks more if you want the locking tuners from Hipshot.

Is this the 10mm I'm looking for?

Thanks a lot. Finally, the right store. I really hate shopping. Appreciate it. I can deal with nonlocking tuners, I was just being lazy. A-gain. I do draw a line when lazy is too much $$. I have to do everything myself (70yo house), so I look for shortcuts that don't cost anything!
