Boy, the only thing I have to say for myself hallucinating my LP is I just came from the doc who gave me 12 epidurals (only 2 holes) and some drugs.

Now I just have to find the Gibson link you sent. . . hey, those mounting plates are slick! At least hipshot's are.

Open gear Hipshots are about $47 plus shipping. Occasionally, you can find them new from your average Joe for $40.

I would bet on 10mm
Again, if you want inexpensive, there are Asian brands that are inexpensive
The Gotoh set I have have a lower ratio which means they are not quite as fine as the Grovers


The Asian ones I linked can also be had from Allparts for $45
I shop them at Arkansas Music Company on EBay

If the hole for the little screw don't line up, I never drill a hole for them
I just get it where I want it and drive the screw in
Does that sound exciting?

If the big hole is too small, less than 10mm,
Then take a 3/8 drill bit, there may actually be some SAE size closer.
But take a gloved hand
Hold the bit tightly
Slowly spin it into the undersized hole
Take you time. You want to do it right
You may want to start on one side then flip her over and finish from the back
This keeps the wood from chipping out as you finish up

When your finish your hole and shift will be perfectly mated

I don't know you. I can only go by what you post:

"I really don't wanna do that. You know, they're the same hexagonal tuners on all $99 guitars. Same as what comes on Squier Strat. Someday I have to fix those too, but they're not fkn up like these. If you knew my house. . . I can actually SEE the drill, but the bits. . . {sigh}

This has got to be the most drawn out thread I have ever seen. Here's all you need to know:

1-These will be a drop in replacement for a budget minded individual. They work fine and I've had no trouble with them.

2-If you want to spend money on a brand name, these are functionally identical to the above tuners.

3- These are by far the most expensive, but they lock for faster string changes.

They all hold tune about the same and they all feel well made.

I agree. ridiculously drawn out. But ... those wont "drop in". She's replacing those cheap, economy, sealed back machines with the top and bottom screw holes and the smaller posts (8mm holes I think). I don't think there is anything that is worth a sheep that will "drop in".

I second the D'Addario Planet Waves auto-trim locking tuners which cuts off the excess string. I have them on one of my Strat guitars but you have to drill the holes bigger on the head-stock to accommodate the larger shaft with it's string cutting mechanism. The ones I have are an 18:1 gear ratio which is great for fine tuning.;)

Thanks a lot. Finally, the right store. I really hate shopping. Appreciate it. I can deal with nonlocking tuners, I was just being lazy. A-gain. I do draw a line when lazy is too much $$. I have to do everything myself (70yo house), so I look for shortcuts that don't cost anything!

These are good tuners and I have them on several guitars. I don't know how well your guitar balances, but those tuners are significantly heavier than your stock tuners and could make the guitar neck heavy if it's close to the balance point. When I need a lighter weight tuner, I use these. They typically run around $40, but you may also need a $6 set of 10mm conversion bushings if the post holes on your guitar aren't vintage size.

Anybody tell that guy? I've never changed strings in my life? Yeah, it's a big deal. And I AM capable of figuring things out myself, but expert advice never hurt. That will be all, GENTLEmen. Kill it, Mincer, I'm boring people. I'll go write that song.
