Hey all you tube heads I found out a great tone combo for preamp tubes while mixing and matching. If you havent tried this combo try it I think you will like it. I have used these three tubes in an amp with EL84's the TUNG SOL 12ax7/EH 12ax7/and the JJ ECC83 MG (this tube sounds better than the ECC83-s IMO. Also, I have used these three tubes in a combo with a hybrid amp putting the EH 12ax7 in my preamp spot of my hybrid amp and then using a English MUFFN tube OD pedal I use the Tung Sol and the JJ ECC 83 MG. Beautiful tone and sound. That JJ ECC 83 Mid Gain tube sounds really nice very warm/creamy gain with nice lows nice mids and not overly bright highs. Let me know what you think if you have tried this combo before or try it after reading this.Give me yo feedback. Tinsley out!!!

I've been a big TS fan for a long while but it's only been a year or a bit more since I realized that the EH were amazing as well...

I find the tungsol ri sounds alot better overall than the ehx. From your description of the jj mg, i think its time for you to grab the mullard ri, thats my next favourite to the tungsol and so far have been really durable to me. While at it, also look for a tad hg 7xxx.

Tung-Sol and Mullard reissues are usually my go-to for the input stage/second gain position in most amps. Unless the setup is on the darker side with plenty of mids & low end, which is the case with my Triple Rec when it's running through the Mesa cab with V30s (that cab really brings out the mids and shaves off the highs), so I have a EH in the input position for that amp.

And my go to for the phase inverter position is always a JJ. For some reason they seem to bring out a little extra growl that other tubes can't, and they're built like a tank, so they hold up to the abuse that a PI tube gets quite well. I also prefer JJs for buffer positions, again for their durability, and buffers don't really color the tone much, if at all, so the tone characteristics don't really matter.

For the positions in between, I just do some tube rolling and use my ears. I can't remember for certain what all I have in the preamps of my amps, but it's a mix.

I almost always use a mix of preamp tubes. But keep in mind that what sounds great in your amp may sound like crap in another. It's not just the tubes that make the tone...there are a lot of other components in an amp which have some affect.

Oh yeah for sure I def agree on that. For instance in the amp I'm talking about its a Kustom PH TUBE 12 new from 2014 its a hybrid amp with a SS power section that has a tube like emulation circuit.I took out the stock speaker and put in a GA-SC64 12 " Eminence speaker and that alone improved the tone a lot. Also its a small 12 watt amp so it has a closed back cab to help with the lows and low mids. Also, I play a Epiphone tradional pro LP and a Epiphone DOT studio guitar semi-hollow with SD pickups so its all inc. in the signal chain as well. But I just wanted to share that those three tubes together for me sound amazing in addition to everything else in my signal path.

yeah i use the tung sol 12ax7 in the v1 for tone. the other preamp tubes just use other brands (for my high gain amps I use those Electro Harmonix) and the power tubes yeah, just use JJ's
