Tuning keys on LP

Re: Tuning keys on LP

IIRC, the Grovers and Sperzels do not use teh same size hole. I know Sperzel is a consistant 25/64".

p.s. To MikeS: how do you like that JB/Jazz combo in your Studio? I'm using the same in mine and love 'em. I also use a Marshall JCM2000 DSL50 amp and think it sounds great.
Cheers!

I love the combo in the LP with the DSL50!

Re: Tuning keys on LP

yes the sperzels are slightly smaller (1/64 or so) than the std modern size... they will still drop into any modern sized hole .. just needs the stud (mounting) hole drilled in some cases.

You've got that backwards I think. I thought they were bigger than most modern tuners.

Re: Tuning keys on LP

well I put my calipers to both a grover and a sperzel. before that last post so I'd be sure ..

grover 9.98mm 0.39in
sperzel 9.61mm 0.378in

although the nut size is smaller on the grover the hole needed is a lil bigger.. this is because the nut has threads on outside and threads into the the gearhousing. where-as the sperzel is just the opposite.. threads on the inside of the nut .. and threads over the housing instead of into ,, make sense?

anyway the only thing bigger on the sperz. is the size wrench used to mount them. .. but the holesize needed is smaller.

You'll kill the value of your guitar greatly, if you're forced to drill any new holes. Klusons allow the headstock to resonate better than bigger metal tuners, which is one reason Les Pauls still come with them. SO many players change tuners, due to tuning hassles, when it's totally unessessary. It's all about the setup with Pauls. Since they have a shorter neck length, intonation that isn't 100% perfect will result in tuning problems. If the truss rod is perfect, the action is perfect, and the intonation is so good that every note on the fretboard reads dead center on a digital tuner, you'll see that there's no reason to change the stock tuners. 80% of aftermarket tuner purchases are by players who don't have their guitars intonated.

Gearjoneser,
Yeah, Ive the the intonation dialed in. Im a stickler for that. Im only a beginner/novice player, but I do pretty well with care and setup and tweaking. I dont care for the looks of these tuners, but after restrining and all, Im impressed with the acuracy and gear ratio. As far as the resonation, Id think heavier keys would help. Thats why they sell that fatfinger thing. But Ill say this axe resonates like nothing Ive played before. I love sperzels, but like the keys Sosomething recommended as they match the screwholes so I can go back if I want. Im in no hurry anymore to change, but If I do, Ill got that route.

Also, they use the nut on top, so Im guessing these would be compatable.
Thanks all
