Sounds like the string is slipping in the nut. Cheap soft metal nuts eventually end up with grooves for the string. I have a RG570 with an original Edge trem and the nut on that is absolutely solid. Not a scratch on it. However, I once changed the strings on a cheap new Ibanez and was amazed to see the nut already wearing out.
