Tuning/setup question

I have Mockingbird ST, and I replaced the Ping Floyd Rose bridge and nut with a bridge and nut made by Schaller. When I setup the guitar, strings 6-3 are in good shape intonation wise, but the first two strings are off. I tune the open string to pitch with a tuner, and then when I hit the harmonic at the twelve fret, the harmonic is noticeably flat. When I intonate all of the strings, and then tune them with a tuner, the first two strings are always out of whack with the other strings, especially when I play chords. So, before I set the intonation on an individual string (fretting the 12 fret and matching it up with the harmonic), should I match the harmonic with the open string first? Or could it be that the nut height has to be adjusted?

Re: Tuning/setup question

is the floyd properly balanced and whatnot?

i'm just asking because the Floyd's i've tuned in the past had to be re-tuned and re-tuned and re-tuned ad naueum, making small increments of progress until you're in tune.

i would imagine it takes just as much energy and perhaps more repetition to get the intonation right...because you make the tiny incremental adjustment in string length on one string which throws off the balance of all the other strings by that same tiny increment...

The Legends speak of a Floyd Rose tuning mechanism that was once tuned and intonated perfectly, and stayed tuned and intonated perfectly once you locked it down no matter what kind of crazy whammy bar theatrics you did with them.

I've never seen one tho.

Re: Tuning/setup question

Just a second. The harmonic above the twelfth fret can never be flat. It is the fretted note that is wrong.

I agree with EP. It is time to get out the Allen keys and make your own adjustments. If you still have the Ping FR vibrato, use the saddle positions on that as a guide for the Schaller.

Re: Tuning/setup question

I blocked my RG4s Edge III bridge at the proper angle
then intonated / open string to 12th fretted
unblocked trem and tightened claw to pitch

wa-la done
