Turning a wah into a volume pedal?

I currently have two Vox V847 wah pedals. One works and the other doesn't. I was thinking of taking the non working one and turning it into a passive volume pedal. Is that possible? I wasn't having the best luck when I was searching earlier.

Re: Turning a wah into a volume pedal?

It's basically the same principle as a guitar's volume setup, where input signal to the pot is passed to the output jack.

Remove the board, keep the jacks (or get new jacks as the old ones are probably attached directly to the board), replace the pot with a suitable model of whatever value a volume pedal might use (keep the little thingy that the pedal strip turns the knob with).

Input jack goes to the pot, pot goes to output jack, 3rd prong goes to ground, grounds go to ground and each other.

Re: Turning a wah into a volume pedal?

That makes sense. I will do some searching. Thank you.

Re: Turning a wah into a volume pedal?

The hard part might be in finding the right pot to use. Attaching the wah sprocket to it might be a bit of a pain, unless it was built for that. However, I can't imagine there wouldn't be a tutorial about doing just this sort of thing online somewhere.

Re: Turning a wah into a volume pedal?

I've added a switch to one of mine to do something similiar, however this was a crybaby.

You can just look up DIY volume pedals

Re: Turning a wah into a volume pedal?

Finding the right pot has been the trickiest part so far. I may just sell it and buy a pedal. Maybe. :)

Re: Turning a wah into a volume pedal?

Why not contact Vox's parts department and get the one from their volume pedal directly?

It shouldn't be. Have you got any spare pots from guitars sitting around ?

You only need a standard pot[ 250K > 500K ] The ring gear on the shaft of the pot in the pedal is usually removable and fits on a standard pot shaft. Beyond that it is a simple wiring /solder job.You could probably use the 100K one in there and just rewire it.

As Dr. Newc said

Don't turn something simple into a complication, your over thinking it.

I do have old guitar pots. Hmm...

Re: Turning a wah into a volume pedal?

According to Dunlop's manual for the High Gain volume pedal, it uses a 250K pot. Different values should affect the tone differently, as with in-guitar pots.

Re: Turning a wah into a volume pedal?

See if you can get a 25K Ohm pot and then place it after a boost pedal.

Re: Turning a wah into a volume pedal?

Not a bad idea. I was planning on putting it after a boost and before the reverb. Things to think about.

Re: Turning a wah into a volume pedal?

As long as the boost has a buffered bypass, if it is true bypass a 25K will kill your signal when it is off.

Re: Turning a wah into a volume pedal?

I did not know that. Thank you.

Sorry, I should have explicitly stated that! I was thinking a boost that is on 100% of the time.
