Twangbanger?

i currently own 2 strats, a 1982 american with the following ::Duckbucker::Stock::Hotrails

and a korean made lite ash strat that came stock with alnico pros.

im been wanting to test and hear a twangbanger for a long time, and was looking for some opinions on it.

Re: Twangbanger?

The Twangbanger and Antiquity Texas Hot Custom are my two favorite Duncan Strat bridge replacement pickups. The Twangbanger is hotter and pushes my amps harder and into overdrive more easily. I prefer either to minihumbuckers and they retain the single coil tone and vibe but have alot more output than vintage Strat bridge pickup. Both combine nicely with the middle pickup but the Ant Texas Hot Custom has slightly better M & B tones...the Twangbanger, being hotter, dominates the middle pickup a little when combined with it. For max output go for the Twangbanger. For slightly superior M & B tones go for the Ant...but it has a little less output than the Twangbanger. Try one! You'll like it. My nephew spend the last four days with us. He's 16 but already a terriffic guitarist. I told him he could play any of my guitars while he here. He loved my MIJ Strat with the Twangbanger so much I told him he could have it. Lew

Re: Twangbanger?

twangbanger is the coolest replacement pickup for a strat bridge......kinda fat and loud with volume all the way up, and gets sweet and twangy with volume rolled off a bit, much closer to a real tele sound. I actually love playing it clean more than overdriven, but when overdriven it can do a good zeppelin/cream/yardbirds sound i think.

Re: Twangbanger?

thanks alot guys, lew awesome story. Im preparing to leave home for awhile, and we had a fundraiser gig coming up, where my whole family usually plays. My 12 year old brother is up and coming...strong, and as my going away gift he recived my prized les paul honey burst. he really rocked that thing out :).

Re: Twangbanger?

:grumble: I wish my uncle would give me an MIJ strat with SD's.

How would a twangbanger sound with SSL-1's? I know it's good with APS's.

I'm sure it sounds great with SSL-1's. Our buddy STRATDELUXER uses one with the Antiquity Surfers, which are very similar to the SSL-1 but handwound in the Custom Shop instead of on the regular line...and he raves about it. I'm installing the same set up in my white MIJ Strat this weekend: two antiuity Surfers and a Twangbanger. Lew

Hello buddy....Actually I'm not currently using a Twangbanger in any of my strats,as I've stayed with the Texas Hot bridge you sold me in it's place....I like the 4th position tones I get better with the Texas Hot and it's the only con about the Twangbanger otherwise..

That's exactly the way I feel about the Twangbanger & Texas Hot Custom:

If authentic Strat m & b combined tones are most important, then the Texas Hot Custom might be the best choice.

If you're willing to sacrifice a little of the authenticity of the m & b combined tones to get a little more output for soloing from the bridge pickup, then the Twangbanger might be the best choice.

Lew...Your idea of a hotter Texas Hot for the bridge is absolutely perfect for my needs...Providing we don't end up losing the 4th postion tones we love..

Re: Twangbanger?

i think thats always part of the trade off, the hotter the bridge pup the more it changes the m/b tones. especially with the twangbanger since the base plate fattens up the tone a little more. the best pos 4 tones ive gotten have been from a full set of ssl1's.

Re: Twangbanger?

So Lew/Stratdeluxer/other strat experts...what currently produced single coil bridge pickup gives the best 4th position quack w/ A5 magnets? And how does it sound by itself?

Re: Twangbanger?

i think the 4th position sounds fine with the twangbanger........ its more suited towards me anyways, im not a big fan of that overall quacky and almost squeeky sound similar to something like clapton used........ with the twangbanger its a little beefier sounding........still cool, and sounds fine to me, especially if the amp is set a little bright, sounds even better

Re: Twangbanger?

I was confused for a moment, I always referred to the Neck/Mid combo as the 4th position :).

I agree with Jeremy: SSL-1.

Or the Antiquity Surfer set with the Antiquity Surfer Custom bridge pickup. That pickup can be as hot as 10K, but it gives perfect m & b tones when combined with the Surfer middle pickup.

I'd give first place to the Surfers and second place to a set of SSL-1's....in terms of fabulous n & m and m & b tones.

But the 6.4K SSL-1 is not a hot pickup. In the SSL-1 set the bridge pickup is 6.4K and the neck and middle are underwound from there.

I kind of like the Surfer set better because the whole set is a little Stronger than vintage, the bridge pickup is alot hotter than vintage...yet the whole set of Surfers still sounds very very vintage! Fabulous Hendrix and SRV tone, IMO.

Re: Twangbanger?

Will an SSL-3 in the bridge paired up with SSL-1's give me a quack when combined w/ the middle pickup? Or will it overpower the middle like the twangbanger?

Re: Twangbanger?

i guess its just me, but i dont hear much overpowering at all in that position with the twangbanger and the APS1..... it sounds very good to me, and has the classic sound. I have played my strat with two of my buddies and they have theirs set up with 3 regular vintage single coils, and my b+m sounds better than either of their strats sound

I was going to say the same thing. It's not like the Twangbanger overpowers the neck or middle pickup...it's just that the Twangbanger is stronger than a vintage Strat bridge pickup and so when it's combined with the neck or bridge pickup the balance is a little differant. The combination isn't quite as glassy and chimey as the classic Layla or Dire Straits kind of chime...though those tones are mostly the n & m pickups. :smack:
