Twangbanger?

The guitar is an '87 USA Strat. 2 point floating bridge, CS Texas Specials. I'm happy with it overall, but I've been really into Greg Koch lately, and want more gristle from the bridge pickup. Anybody have a better option for Tele tones than a Twangbanger?

Re: Twangbanger?

I was about to say, doesn't the Twangbanger already have a steel base-plate? But he doesn't actually have one yet. :D

Re: Twangbanger?

+1 for Twangbangers!!
I usually run my mouth for 4 paragraphs about how much I love these. So I won't. My favorite Single Coil.

Re: Twangbanger?

I don't think of the Twangbanger as giving a Strat a Tele tone.

But I do think of it as giving a Strat a thicker, beefier tone with less of the shrill treble of the average A5 Strat bridge pickup.

It's a good alternative.

I use a Fralin SP43 and prefer it to any other Strat bridge pickup I've owned.

But a Duncan SSL5 is also excellent and I might prefer it to the Twangbanger...especially with a tone control on the bridge pickup.

Putting a steel baseplate on a Strat pickup does beef it up ever so slightly. But not enough, IMO, to make a dramatic improvement.

Re: Twangbanger?

Lew, have you ever used the QP? Seems like the Fralin SP43 is going for a similar goal. A lot of guys I dig (Oz Noy, Jimmy Herring) use Fralins or Lollars, so I'd be into trying either.

Re: Twangbanger?

Well, a Twangbanger won't compensate for the mental effects of actually holding a Tele. But dialing in a Tele tone is simple with the Twangbanger. Playing like a Tele master is not, though.

The SP43 has adjustable polepieces and ceramic magnet under the coil.

It has a different tone than the QP, and it's more like a P90.

The QP is a cool pickup too, but it doesn't remind me of a P90 quite as much as the SP43 does.

Re: Twangbanger?

I didn't see the T at first and read it as wangbanger lol .

Drop the "b" too, and you get wang anger!

Twangbanger bridge pickups definitely get you moving into tele turf on a strat style guitar. I have one in the bridge position and like it ... tried one in the middle spot once and did not care much for it. The Music Man Albert Lee SSS has a metal base plate on the bridge pick up and it renders good telefied tones too. The TB might be a little hotter pickup I think.
