Tweed Deluxe (i.e. 5E3)???

Re: Tweed Deluxe (i.e. 5E3)???

I've kicked off an email to Bruce at Mission. I'm not sure the 5E3 is the route I want to take due to the lack of clean headroom. The Bassman or Low Power Twin kit seems like what I'm looking for but I've got some research to do yet.

Thanks to all for the input.

*cough*double deluxe*cough*

seriously, if you like the tone, it makes sense

there are tons of amp building forums all over the internet, you can get an empty cab from www.mojotone.com kits aren't your only option. Most convenient option? yeah probably. But if you got a tone in your head, and that tone is a deluxe, then it makes sense to do a ddx

Part of the quandry I face is I'm not entirely familiar with the nuances across the Fender spectrum. Until recently (i.e. the past two years) all I concerned myself with was high gain monster. Ever since I built the Fender Champ kit, I've become interested in great cleans which, of course, leads me to Fender. It'll take me awhile to acquaint myself with exactly what the Bassman tone is vs. the Deluxe tone vs. the Twin tone (etc., etc.).

Are you even sure you want tweed? :)

Maybe a Blackface?

Re: Tweed Deluxe (i.e. 5E3)???

Yea, if you are new to Tweed tone, it is TOTALLY different than blackface tone. Tweeds are like Marshalls, but have creamier tones and a good warm crunch with a tight bass end. The cleans on Tweeds are not prinstine like a blackface, but on the thinner side and are much more natural, but sound almost dirty compared to blackface cleans.

Nope, not sure at all! I need to take a step back and figure out what I want to throw into the amp mix to compliment the two Riveras I'm playing, as well as what I to accomplish/learn from the next amp kit project.

I believe my step is to search for some sound clips of the various Fenders to get an idea which amp/circuit matches what I'm hearing in my head.

Re: Tweed Deluxe (i.e. 5E3)???

I just built Jeremy a Tweed Bandmaster style circuit. I made it switchable from fixed (adjustable) bias to cathode bias. I also used the "ground" switch to switch the Negative Feedback on and off.

I ended up going with 12AY7's in V1 and V2. A 12AX7 in V3. I tried the TAD 6L6WGB versus the new Tung Sol 5881's and stayed with the 5881's. The rectifier is a NOS 5U4.

Quite the toneful amp. His cab is going to have one 12 and two 10's in it. He'll be able to run any combination of speakers into the four otuputs I ran. 3 of them connected to the 4 ohm tap and one connected to the 8 ohm tap.

I can't wait to see the cab, as jeremy is building it himself. It ought to be killer.

Re: Tweed Deluxe (i.e. 5E3)???

yes yes yes i cant wait!!

the pine is fingerjointed for the cab, but im having trouble finding some 3/8" MDO for the baffle board, so i might have to start with something thicker till i can find the 3/8"

i played a pine cab with tweed on it and a similar cab with a rubbed oil finish. the oiled cab sounded much better

You can get this board that artists use that's about 5/16"...I've used it in tweed style combo amps with floating baffles that I've built and it's resonant and sounds great. Maybe you do need 3/8" (or more?) though if you're mounting all those speakers on it. Might be alot of weight.

I've used the 5/16" thick stuff with a heavy Vinatge 30 though and it seems to hold up. Never drop my amps or throw them around though.

I think we're talking about the same product! :laugh2: Contact Bruce. He got it for me. He probably has some. It's the same stuff Gerald Weber talks about in his books.

I think you can get from a really good art supply store.

It has paper on both sides and a wood core.

I'll be putting a cathode to fixed bias switch into my Tweed Pro. I really like that bit of flexibility. It certainly does add a bit of "mess" inside to the wiring. Just more going on, not much room to put the new parts.

Re: Tweed Deluxe (i.e. 5E3)???

just played the celtic 5e3 at a blues gig tonight, a nice in house pa and a cheap large diaphram condeser mic helped the volume :) but the tone was wonderful. i talked to scott about my new amp a half hour before i went on and i was day dreaming about tone through out the gig.

Yes that's the stuff we use. MDO with fir plys and the outer overlays are a smooth masonite type coating for sign painters.
