I finally got to install the Jensen speaker and retube my Tweed Pro Junior. And well, I'm LIKING THIS THING ALOT! :smokin:
Speaker is a Jensen P10Q, I never played it with a 10" before I ordered this one so I can't comment on how it compares to the stock speaker. As I wrote before I had it hooked up to the two greenbacks in my bluesbreaker combo and it really rocked through those. Someone wrote that I might even prefer the two greenbacks over a single 10" Jensen.
Well, first of I installed the speaker and tried it out with the old tubes in there. It sounded a little boxy but otherwise good! As I expected it to sound a little boxy I wasn't dissapointed at all. It was a real tight fit thought, the magnet is VERY close to the powertubes but it works, I dont' have the metal plate and springs mounted over the powertubes as it's that close to the tubes that I think it might cause it to rattle and make unwanted noises.
Cranked it up and it sang real nice, roaring tone with quite much gain actually. With the Jensen it sounded alot more Fendery like I wanted it to. Lots of that British voicing that it had through the Greenbacks was gone. And I love that, since I don't want the British sound from this one, but as much of the Tweed fender sound as possible. So I prefer the Jensen over the greenbacks.
I powered it off, let the tubes cool down and changed them out. It had Sovtek 12AX7WA in V1 and a Fender 12AX7A in V2. Powertubes were a pair of Sovtek EL84's. I put the following tubes in instead which I ordered from Tube Amp Doctor along with the Jensen speaker. (tube descriptions are from TAD's homepage)

V2 TAD 12AX7WB-R Premium Selected: Very low noise but lower gain also. Recommended to solve microphonic problems.
Well, talk about change of tone guys. It's got the warmth and fullness just like I wanted it to, some would even say it's darker now. Really beautiful clean sound (even though that isn't what this ones made for
). I keep the tone around 8 with my tele and to have the possiblity to use the guitars tone pot as well. Compared to the old tubes, now it breaks up later and does have significantly less gain when cranked. Which I think is a good thing as I thought it had too much with the old tubes.
It was quite noisey with the old tubes as well, alot less noise now. Not noise free but I never expected it to be that either. The plastic input jack is worn down and I'm going to replace it with a switchcraft when I get the time to, that might bring down the noise even more.
Haven't had the possiblity to play Thursday Burst through it yet but I can allready say that this is the amp for a telecaster, my Lite Ash Tele and the Tweed Pro Junior are made for each other, I'm completely sure about that!
To complete this stripped down tele-tweedish rig of mine I've got a HAO Sole Pressure Overdrive pedal (tweed sounding OD pedal) on it's way from Germany, it'll hopefully be here by next weekend. So then we'll see how close to the tweed sound I'm going to land!
Being a soundclip recorded who records quite alot of stuff I should of course provide some soundclips for you guys. But I'm sorry to say that I don't have the possiblity to do that right now. So you'll have to wait for that until maybe next weekend or something. Check back in this thread if you're interested as I'll post some links here as soon as I record something.
Damn I'm happy with this amp! Quite a deal as I paid the Pro Junior, the Jensen speaker and the preamp tubes with the money I got when I sold my Marshall AVT100 that had been a dust collector since over a year back
