Twelfth fret inlay

I'm ordering a custom guitar from an awesome local brand.

It's not going to be super custom, just some control modifications, but I am looking at inlays since the guitar comes stock with only side dots. Problem is I'm not big on extravagant inlays, and I wouldn't want to do anything that could ruin the resale value of the guitar if I had to sell it.

What shapes would you think would look good by itself just before 12th fret? Would a single block look out of place?

Edit: It is basically a Les Paul with a red front, natural back, sides, and neck. No binding besides the natural exposed maple cap. Oh and a maple headstock veneer

I could see a tasteful very skinny oval or diamond. Either a single one about an inch long, or a pair of tiny ones.
For something a little more unusual, maybe a narrow stripe sort of like a pickup blade, only short- 1½" maybe. Like a block but thinner.

A rectangular block in mother of pearl might look good.

That's a pretty elegant looking guitar. if it were mine, I would do something along the lines of these.

A matching mahogany inlay would be unreal.

Wood instead of your typical pearl is a cool idea. Mahogany to match the back or maple to match the edge. Myself, I'd still probably go with a simple shape tho. Although the second shape that Jolly suggested would look good in either color wood.

I can't really picture an oval inlay to be honest

That's what my initial thought was, but I wanted to see everyone else's thoughts. Glad to hear someone else thinks it would be a cool idea.

Thanks man, they are sweet playing and feeling as well. I played a few after going to guitar center to try some Gibsons USAs and fell in love. Beats any LP Studio I have tried thus far.

I'm not sure how that would look as a single inlay. I bet it would look sick as a full set though.

Wow, that does look cool, especially on intricate shapes and such. I'm not sure if they offer mahogany inlays as a normal customization.

I'm not doing it myself, I don't have the free time to make my own guitar . I would love to though.

Nothing wrong with stick-on inlays. It's all about the END RESULT. Inlays are all about LOOKS not tonal influence. So what if they're stickers? Boo-frikken-hoo. You can do tons more awesome for tons less cash and get the same audio and visual impact.

Oh I assumed you where talking about inlay material on ebay that was cheap

Can you provide evidence that inlays have a tonal influence? Or were you referring to the cost difference?

I can see your point Kramer, I do want it to look nice as this is going to my kinda show guitar. I think unless the stickers actually look at all nice, they won't be a replacement for a good inlay.

Idk, I might order a sticker and try em out on my old Chinese Acoustic to see how they look up close. The Dots don't fit it very well in my opinion anyway..

Not to mention many claim that they don't stay on well and leave gunk on your fingerboard.

If I were getting a CMG instrument, I'd get one with the "racing stripes" on the body. I'd probably go with stickers as well but what do I know? My preferred guitars have no inlays on them.
