Two Classic Stacks in series: Did anyone try this?

Hi guys,

After seeing the wiring on the new Ibanez AZ series, I've been wondering if wiring two Classic Stacks in series would result in a sound in the "full humbucker" ballpark.

I have a LTD ST213A, an ash Strat clone, already loaded with a Hot Rails in the bridge, and Classic Stacks in the middle and neck positions. The HR can be wired in series or parallel via a push-pull volume pot.

I really like the sounds I get from this guitar, both in clean and high gain settings. But since seeing how the new Hyperion Duncans are wired in the new Ibanez model I've been wondering if something like the two Stacks in series is doable, and if the tone it gives would be a worthy addition to the palette the LTD already gives me.

Kind regards!

I've done it once, but it doesn't sound like a humbucker at all. It sounds like single coils in series, which to me has always been a muddy mess. It is worth trying to hear for yourself if you could use such a sound, but it doesn't do much for me.

i have a strat with three antiquity II jaguar pups that i can put the bridge and middle in series. i find it useful for slide and some other bits but its not my go to tone. id think the neck and middle might be pretty tubby and dark. i also have a tele with a 4way switch that lets me put the neck and middle pups in series, antiquity II firebird neck pup and a custom wound a5 tele bridge pup. both are pretty bright sounding pups and again, the tone is very usable for somethings but not something i use all that often

Well, that darkness and muddiness would a very different approach than the clarity of the regular sounds. I'll talk to my tech about trying this.

Tanks for your replies, guys!

It's a pretty interesting sound. Still sounds single coil and jangley but it's hella hot and punchy.

what value controls? i like my single coils (even classic stacks) with 250k controls, thats what sounds best to me. 500k is overly bright and i also dont like no-load tone controls most of the time. series doesnt sound jangley to me

itll be fat sounding for sure but not in the same way as a humbucker for a bunch of reasons. it doesnt hurt to try it and see if you find it cool or not

Let us know how your experiment turns out. It will help anyone else with the same questions.

Will do! Maybe in a few weeks, since my tech is currently on vacation, but I'll keep you posted.
