Two questions about Antiquityhumbuckers...

First, I’ll say I’ve been using Antiquitys for twenty years. Been an off and on thing, but over the last few years they’ve become my very favorites.

I used to remove the covers, but twenty years ago I didn’t know much about magnets and didn’t notice if they were polished or Roughcast.

These days I leave the covers on my Antiquitys...although I remove them from my Seth Lovers.

So question #1: are the A2 magnets Roughcast on all Antiquity humbuckers?

And question #2: have you ever swapped the Roughcast A2 for Polished A2 in an Antiquity?

And a third bonus question: which did you prefer?

Re: Two questions about Antiquityhumbuckers...

My Antiquity humbucker had a smooth but beat up A2, not roughcast. I prefer smooth magnets all of the time because I don't care for the slight "grainy" sound. I'm split between A2 and A3 in the neck. I like how creamy A2 is, but like the spank from A3 while still being sweet. I like the Ant magnet, I think it's nice for the neck.

I think they're smooth in my set. From posts here, the biggest reason to swap mags in an Ant seems to be to just have fully-charged ones, as everyone isn't thrilled with degaussed A2's, as they're a low output mag to being with. As far as rough or polished, I like roughcast in bridge PU's to smooth out the high end, and prefer polished in the neck for a bit more edge.

Re: Two questions about Antiquityhumbuckers...

I have Ants, but i also have a gauss meter and do my own degaussings. But these 'dunaged' mags are different than other A2s. They are not roughcast and they do not charge up like other A2s. So they are fully charged to lower level than other A2s.

Re: Two questions about Antiquityhumbuckers...

i have a covered set with the stock magnets and i dont know if they are rough or polished. i have an uncovered double cream bridge that ive done some mag swapping. stock magnet is back in and is polished, not rough. its in one of my most played guitars and it sounds great

Re: Two questions about Antiquityhumbuckers...

Thanks. Polished. That explains a lot.

My Custom Shop Pearly Gates are Roughcast A2.

They have almost identical DCR readings to Antiquitys but they are warmer. Less treble.

Less treble than Seth Lovers (Polished A2) and regular PG’s (also Polished A2).

I like that idea too. Polished in the neck and Roughcast in the bridge.

However, my Antiquitys are louder and drive my amp amp harder than my Seths...unless I remove the covers from my Seth’s. With the covers removed the Seth Lovers sound stronger and fuller...thicker and more driving.

I can leave the covers on my Antiquitys...but with covers on, my Seth’s are not as strong as my Antiquitys.

The DC on my Seth Lovers is close to the factory spec: 7.2k and 8.1k.

The DC on the Antiquitys I recently put in my ‘95 PRS Custom 22 is 7.7k and 8.6k.

My Custom Shop Pearly Gates measure 7.6k and 8.7k and they lack treble compared to the Antiquitys.

But the Antiquitys apparently use Polished A2 and the CSPG’s definitely use Roughcast A2.

I’m going to put Polished A2 in the CSPG’s.
