Two questions

I'm thinking of trying out a humbucker in the bridge of my Strat with Surfers in it. I like the tone of the bridge slot but it doesn't have enough oomph. Before I got out and buy a new pup though, I'm gonna try my texas antiquity in there and see how I feel about it now. But I would like to know what hte consesus is on the SH-5 Custom. Does it sound good split? Would it pair well with the Surfers?

I've tried a JB before and I didn't really like it. I don't really like it in my friends LP either. The Custom seems good because it's not too hot.

Also, I was looking at the excess pickups I have lying around, and I came across my Texas Antiquity set. Now, I never got to try the ste with the middle pickup. It never worked. I didn't install them for about two months, so I didn't know they didn't work. But upon looking at it. There seems to be some black tar like substance on the coils on the middle pup. I wonder if this is why it doesn't work? No vibrating maybe? Can this be fixed?

From my experiences I would have to say the Custom sounds like crap when split, very bright and thin. The Custom Custom was great in my HM Strat, split it was full and warm. These are my experiences, you may get different results.

I like the Custom split. Are you sure your Custom was working correctly? The Custom and CC have the same coils. If anything, a split Custom is ballsier (if brighter) than the split CC.

Probably a coil is broken. Can you see any loose wires in the area in question? Do you have a multimeter with which you can check the resistance?
