UGD -Epi G-400 Custom

Wattage

High Voltologist
Monday I picked up a 2003 Epi G-400 Custom for a great price, really digging the guitar.

It's all stock but plays pretty well and I am very surprised how good it sounds. Acoustically it is very loud and resonant which I like. The 3 pickups sound very good but lean towards a little mud as most Epi pickups do, there's no doubt it'll get re-wired but it works for now and it has a lot of tonal options. It has a few dings on the body and a crack at the input jack (which is why the fender washer is there), it also came without a switch tip and had a cracked knob but those are minor things. I am thinking that marshmellow yellow might not be my favorite color so I'll likely refin it this summer, not 100% sure on the color yet but metallic orange sounds pretty good at the moment.

I am thinking that I am going over to SG's for my main guitars and this just seemed like a no brainer to have as a decent backup. Looking to add a white VOS SG in the very near future.

You DO realize that that that guitar doesn't sound good and you can't really play it? Regardless of what you think, Blueman has told us this is true.

I love a triple SG! What pups you thinking about?

I have never done this, but I think a PG n/Distortion n/Custom b would be AWESOME!

The Distortion would add miss to the Custom b and tight bass to the PGn and a little high end bite.

Just a thought….

C5b/59b/59n

Possibly a JB instead of the C5 since I have one here.

I tell ya what this guitar gets some serious Nuge sounds just the way it is:saeek:

Re: UGD -Epi G-400 Custom

Saw one at a local music store for $499.00. Plays effortlessly and was really surprised the neck was closer to a 59 rather than a 60's style.

One combination I'd be interested in trying is a coil tapped WLH neck and bridge in the middle, and a 59/Custom in the bridge

"Possibly a JB instead of the C5 since I have one here" this might really work really well. Had another three pick up Gibson and stuck three pup's I really hated into it - a 59 neck, a 59 bridge in the middle, and a JB in the bridge. These pickups sounded incredible in this guitar. It had to go due to its weight. I was surprised the purchaser still has those pick ups in it and thinks they are awesome.

Still spouting things you know nothing about, ah yes, some things will never change. I have an Epi SG Custom, the alpine white model from a few years ago that came with a factory maestro vibrato, which I've mentioned a number of times on this forum. I've been one of the forum's most vocal supporters of Seth's for at least 5 years, and you still tell members that I don't like A2 PU's. Well, never let the facts get in your way.

Seth's never worked for me unfortunately, not big on A2 mags though I had A2P's in an old LP I had and they were perfect in that guitar.

Going to try and throw the JB in the bridge for rehearsal tonight if I have time today.

I love it. I'm thinking SG's are the way to go. Along with Les Paul's and Strats and Tele's and...

Re: UGD -Epi G-400 Custom

Congrats! Nice score! Never cared much for the look of the SG, but I bought a G400 once and the thing was a BLAST to play! I put a C5 in it and it sounded great!
Orange would be pretty cool. Espec if you could find an Orange like that axe Xssive (sp?) had.
Wouldnt suprise me if you became an sg guy. you seem to gel well with those epi reissue (cant think of the model right now. Coronet?) and they remind me alot of an SG. Thin body, etc.

+1. Over the last 10 years Epi's had over 30 versions of set-neck SG's, when you count all the colors, finishes, PU's, pickguards, & tailpieces.

Well, I have played quite a few…in fact, I was "on call" to give this a test run by the sales manager:

And, of course, I actually play:

Re: UGD -Epi G-400 Custom

Well once again Epi pups had me fooled. The lower volume sounds were really good but open it up and it's a big old ball of pooh, hehe. Oh well.

I'm curious has anyone tried the new Epi pickups? I know they make a big deal about how authentic they sound but I haven't come across any yet.

Re: UGD -Epi G-400 Custom

Check the value of the volume pot. If it's 300k than try a 500k. It could take some of the mud out.

Re: UGD -Epi G-400 Custom

SG's are cool. Replace the pots, jack and wiring with better components and the pickups would sound better. Not great, just better.

Re: UGD -Epi G-400 Custom

Great score Scott. I love mine. As we discussed elsewhere I went with 3 '59s and it sounds great, though I'm sure a C5 will rock in the bridge. I wired mine as standard HH with a push/pull on the neck tone that combines the middle pickup with the bridge. I also added a TonePros bridge and tailpiece.

Cool guitar. I'm still tempted to add a trem though. 3-pickup white-ish SG is all about Glen Buxton.

Re: UGD -Epi G-400 Custom

Nice! SGs seem to have that nice acoustic sound to them- my SG Faded is LOUD unplugged. Can't wait to see what you decide to do with it.

Tangerine Pearl look good to you?
