Re: Ultimate SDUG Semi Hollow Preliminaries

My 1968 Epiphone Casino. Not the most beautiful guitar, but a historic piece if you care for such things as this was the very first guitar that Dennis Kline ever painted. Kline is the fellow who did all the Kramer guitars, and famous 80s guitars like the Motley Crew drama/comedy guitar, or the Marilyn Monroe guitar (I think Cinderella?) and things like that. He did this painting in the early 70s when the guitar belonged to my cousin, who bought it new. For the time, that was a very impressive paint job. He and Dennis were best friends. My cousin also cut off the lower cutaway to get better access to the frets, lol. It had a small painting on the upper cutaway on the front of the guitar of what looked like a canyon with UFOs flying around, but I had the face replaced over twenty years ago and I don't know what happened to the original. I though I kept it, but... That's the original neck P90, and a humbucker sized P90 in the bridge. The painting was starting to decay pretty rapidly and when I had the guitar worked on (new face, new fretboard) the guy clear coated the painting and the decay stopped, thank goodness.

It's a shame because I had one guitar shop start the "restoration" and I was young, so I listened to everything he said, and I let him replace the original fretboard. I'm very sorry I let that happen. I paid him hundreds of dollars for it and after a year, still didn't have the guitar back. I finally demanded it back and nearly killed him when I saw that all he did was put on the fretboard and remove the face. Found out he had a huge drug habit, so I went back the next week and I was going to take a Les Paul from off his wall for reimbursement--and he was shut down. I wasn't going to steal it mind you; I was going to beat the crap out of him if he gave me any problems.

:wow: There are some seriously secksie axes in here!

My humble submission (I need better pics!--w/o pollen). It's anxiously awaiting a Zhangbucker set of replacement pups. Pots and clear black knobs will be installed when they arrive. Ibanez AWD82:

I have always loved this one

That casino is cool - its got a great story.
I used to have a 1966 Epiphone Al Caiola model - which is a casino with no fholes and some weird switching system. Casinos and 330s are killer axes. So much character and response - but very prone to feedback if you crank em up. Dunno if they really fit the category of a semi tho...they are more like a thinline hollowbody.

Woooooo, are they ever! This P90 I have in the bridge is overwound and feeds back like nuts, but it sounds sooooo good. If I use it with more of a plexi/Marshall nmv patch on my Tonelab it's good, but once I add some serious drive, forget it, lol. I dig what you're saying about it being a full hollow/thinline. If Aceman decides to can it, I'm cool with that. For now he said Casinos are in, but I'm good if he changes his mind.

'90 or '91 Epiphone Sheraton II, made in Korea. A Christmas gift from my father while we were living in Germany. Has been my main guitar since then. First modification was to remove the pickguard: it was ugly and rattled. Also changed the position of the strap button from behind the neck joint to the upper bout.
Changed the pickups around '95 to 59n/JBb, and then to a P-Rails set in 2009. Had to drill holes for switches and make pot/switch holes larger for upgrades.
Switches: Rail/Parallel/P-90

Tone Monster.

I like the natural finish look. Sentiment is great. But I'm definately not digging Medusa's hair in the right f-hole :P

Re: Ultimate SDUG Semi Hollow Preliminaries

When I changed out the pickups and electronics I made a template of the layout on cardboard then soldered everything together. What I didn't realize was that I had allowed for too much slack in the wires (I was trying to leave enough wire to avoid pulling anything too tight). After it was all back together, and it worked, I decided to leave it that way. The good news is I don't notice it when I'm playing.

Red is a pain to try and photograph and get the flame to pop. I'll try and take some pics outside tommorrow when the sun is shining.

Jolly, I don't care if you think the flame doesn't pop, that's a purty 335...

Re: Ultimate SDUG Semi Hollow Preliminaries

I gotta go with Jonsers, I have only seen one I liked more and it was one of Lews although I recall him selling one of his.

There weren't any cips/twist-ties on the inside to take hold of those wires? I know my Epi Sheraton II had them.

And true, when playing they're definately not noticeable ;)

I don't remember anything like that being inside the guitar, once the pots, switch and output jack were loose, the wiring all came out without any issues. That might be something they added to later production runs.

One day I'll get around to making it neater, maybe.

1977 Ibanez 2630 w/Rio Grande BBQ and Kent Armstrong Vintage in this pic. It's currently got a gold set of EMGs, but I'm thinking of going back to the Rio and a 59b in the neck. For my money, there's no better semihollow out there. I love the bigass factory frets and easy neck profile.

EMG's? WTF is wrong with you? Did one of those big guns go off too near your head son? Did you fall over board and spend too much time without oxygen going to that empty sponge in your head. :cool2:

I'm gonna allow this one in, as shown....but only because I know AT LEAST Jolly and Jo are gonna kick your @$$. :28:

EMG's. Really...:banghead:

Lucky for him it's his guitar, not yours.

Wasn't aware anybody needed to check with you before deciding what pickups they wanted in their guitar. You don't have to play it, why does it matter to you?

Well now you know. In fact, this makes me think we better get a check on all of YOUR guitars. You protest a bit too much. Maybe there are some unsanctioned mods on some of them...:scratchch
