ultrasonic pickups

Re: ultrasonic pickups

Kirk Hammet had them in a couple of his axes briefly but I don't know if he ever recorded with them, that's about all I know about them.

Re: ultrasonic pickups

I think they were advertised as having a flat eq, and that you could dial any tone you wanted into them from the amp. Other than that, I don't know anything about them.

Re: ultrasonic pickups

They were passive pickups made in Germany and designed by Bill Lawrence. They were billed as being tonaly neutral so they let the guitars natural character through. They did this by having a flat eq. I think they also boasted having "rare earth magnets" whatever they are? The one criticism I heard was that it was nearly impossible to get a good harmonic out of them. I played a guitar with one and I liked the resonance but I found it hard to get good harmonics out of them. They also weren't very hot even the high output models.

Re: ultrasonic pickups

They made them in WEST Germany, you know, at the times when they were also East Germany and Soviet Union etc.

Ultrasonics should be installed very close to the strings because they haven't got any (or very very little) string pull. They are not alike ordinary passive pickups. They could sound low output pups 'cos people haven't installed them close enough, infact they are little hotter than vintage pups. I guess they are working more like vocal microphones but I don't know for sure. This is what I've heard.

I own one single coil type with vintage output, the Reference 1 was the model if I remember right. Somebody said that it's a humbucking single coil. I haven tried it to any guitars yet, but I guess I will try it to my Custom Explorer because it's the only guitar I have with a single coil mount and I'm not pleased to The DiMarzio Fast Track 1 which I have now in the neck position.

They had 6 different models of Ultrasonic 1, 2 and 3 are single coils, and the bigger the number, the bigger output. 4, 5 and 6 were humbucker models.

Re: ultrasonic pickups

Dragging up an old one! I just put a set of the Ref. 6s in my Kaufman V and I think they sound great. The guitar has a really low middy character that comes right through in the pickups, and I have no problems getting a pinch harmonic whatsoever, as long as they are ridiculously close to the strings. I just got me a new computer, so some clips might be forthcoming, but it will probably be a while. I'd actually like to find myself another set...

...anybody?

Re: ultrasonic pickups

I think I remember Zerberus chiming in on these a while back on a thread here or the JCF about Ultrasonics since well they are from Germany. I forget if they got a thumbs up from him though.. I never came across a set or I would have bought them. I wonder how they compare to other rare or not so common pickups like the old Reflex pickups or Mel lace's brothers company APC (Adder Plus Inc) which also is high output and a flat EQ, passive but with the dynamics of actives.

Re: ultrasonic pickups

I have ultrasonics in my ESP reverse strat. Pretty good pups. Very flat eq and sounds from blues to hard rock. They are both hated and loved because the eq...
