Uncovered Seth Lover?

Re: Uncovered Seth Lover?

Thanks for all the replies/discussion. So it seems the Seths can be purchased new without covers, even though the official site doesn't list that as an option.

In the end, I decided to go a different way, though. I managed to score a PGBJ, so I'm going to try that first. If it isn't quite what I'm looking for, I'll go back to the Seth idea, or perhaps an Antiquity.

Can't go wrong with any of those.

PGB's sound different than Seth's; I'm a big Seth fan, the bridge is rich and full sounding, didn't find PGB's to have as much of those qualities.

Ant's are different sounding yet again. A different wind and they have aged (degaussed A2's) and some of us here don't care for that weaker sound. The common assumption is: "If Seth's are great, Ant's must sound even better", and that's not necessarily the case. Some players love them and for others they can be disappointing with the stock mags.

You'd think that each of these 3 A2 PAF's would give every PAF fan what they want, but having owned all 3, only the Seth gave me the tones I was after.

with 500k pots i find the seth bridge can be almost shrill in some guitars where i dont find the pgb or antiquity to be that way

Have only tried the uncovered Seths in my mahogany neck/body & maple top Hamer and PRS guitars and the word “shrill” never entered my mind. :)

“Fuller, more “ballsy”, more “textured”, more “drive”, more “output”, more “body”....certainly did though.

Truthfully, the covered Seth’s sounded “weak” in direct comparison...even though I liked them a lot previously.

For some reason the Antiquity suits me covered, although I have uncovered them in the past and loved them uncovered too.

I guess when I play my Antiquity guitars I’m sort of wanting to hear a pickup with a little more of a warm, slightly “hollow” and “old” sound.

The PG’s are in my last PRS and are #3 in my preference and behind the Seth and Antiquity.

So my three favorite Duncans are the uncovered Seths, stock Antiquitys and then the PG’s.

I’m a jazzy blues and lover of British blues kind of player. Not a metal player or Van Halen style player at all.

My favorite players are guys like B.B. King, Michael Bloomfield, 60’s era Jeff Beck, Peter Green, Mick Taylor & Eric Clapton...and favor those sorts of tones.

IME Seths have a Fendery twang to them with certain amps and certain settings. If I'm using a regular stock Gibson with 498/490 and have the amp set up to sound good with that, then grab a Seth loaded guitar and plug straight in, it can sound shrill on certain gain settings and even just on certain strings / at certain fret points. Other time Seths exhibit a midrange honk to them. But I've found being willing to adjust the amp or guitar tone controls a bit can tame it.

Re: Uncovered Seth Lover?

I'd describe the Seth bridge top end as (using guitarist adjectives here) a "nickel-y chime" with a "very slight nasally upper midrange tinge".

Agreed. They seem to follow along with the old 60's-70's famous guitarists' penchant for removing their Gibson PAF covers for more output.
