Unexpected NGD

My wife surprised me with it yesterday. It may not be the high end one. But it is the first Gretsch I have owned. It's a black electromatic pro jet. The fit and finish are real good as are the frets. I like the feel of it but haven't completely made up my mind about the pickups. If I did decide to replace them would regular humbuckers fit?
I will try to give a better review after I've had more time with it.

Very nice.

If you do replace the pickups, the only thing I would put in there are real Filtertrons or TV Jones.

Re: Unexpected NGD

God bless our wives. I would leave that alone. (Unless it truly sounds terrible.)

Re: Unexpected NGD

Congratulations with your new guitar mate!! That's a great gesture from your wife!! :fing2:
Looks pretty neat! Have fun playing it!

Awesome wife alert!

Mess with the height and poles a lot before you replace those pickups they are usually very reactive to changes. Also might want to see what pots and caps are in there. Really well built guitars but I have had a mixed bag of guts in ones I have owned, I prefer 500k pots with .022 caps fwiw, I've had 250k's in some of the Gretsches I've had. Seems a little dull to me that way, I like Gretsches to be a touch high-endy and crunchy, everything just sounds fuller on them.

TV Jones are great and they are terrific to deal with, SD Filtertrons are pretty great too btw

Ahhh.....

I have no idea why my pics keep getting flipped sideways. Thanks guys so far I like it the stock pickups are better than I thought they would be. Having this does not help the gas I have had for one of the orange hollow bodies for several years now.

I agree. Mess with the pickup height and pole piece heights before deciding on replacing those Blacktops. I had a 2014 Gretsch 5422TDC (the double cut Electromatic hollow body) that has the same electronics. Those pickups can sound pretty damn good if adjust properly. They sound pretty close to the High Sensitivity Filter'trons in the high end Gretsch guitars.

As for the electronics, Grestch has got very, very consistent since Fender acquired them. Mine had good pots, from what I could tell by the master volume pot. I added a a tone bleed cap/resistor mod to the master volume to help is clean a bit better on the low part of the pot. I don't think they were CTS, but they weren't the cheap, mini pots used in lower end import guitars.
