Unpotted Jazz neck?

So I have a dilemma. I think the best sounding PAF type bridge pickup that SD makes is the Seth Lover, but I like the clarity of the Jazz neck. But I don't really want to have one potted and one unpotted pickup. Has anyone done this and was there an issue? Or would it be better to try to get an unpotted Jazz neck?

Re: Unpotted Jazz neck?

This generally isn't a problem, but there are people who either get an unpotted Jazz neck, or get their Seth potted.

Re: Unpotted Jazz neck?

Why don't you want one potted and one unpotted? I mix my unpotted Seth neck with potted 59s, Pearly Gates, Custom whatever all the time. If the pickups sound good together, potting is irrelevant, unless you plan to stand within 3 feet of the cone of a maxed 40++ watt amp.

Re: Unpotted Jazz neck?

It is quite literally impossible to unpot a pickup. So you either need to have the neck one specially made unpotted, or pot the remaining bridge one.

Re: Unpotted Jazz neck?

right, you cant unpot a pup. youll never get all the wax out. if it was me and i already had a jazz and seth lover, id throw em in the guitar and not give it a second thought. if you dont own a jazz then it isnt hard to order one unpotted if you really want one

Re: Unpotted Jazz neck?

Well, I took it as 'order it unpotted', not physically taking the wax out.

Your Guitar will sound magnificent!! Mine is just like yours. One potted, one unpotted. Same pickups.
Have no fear, I am about to mix an unpotted Seth bridge I ordered with an RCA5 magnet for my SG re-issue I have, and am going to put a Jazz neck in it as they will sound killer, I know this. My Jazz neck has always been my favorite neck humbucker. I say I CAN hear the diff between a covered and uncovered pickup. Some say they can't tell the difference. Well, when it comes to POTTED pickups, I CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE!! And I am PICKY!!
I ordered 2 Hybrids from the custom shop unpotted, they accidentally made one with wax potting. MJ, the Queen of the Custom shop called to see if I would try it. I always say yes to MJ.
So I put one each in 2 of my HSS Strats, all other parts the same, and I admit I cannot tell the difference, potted, unpotted, no difference. I used to take these and my SG on stage when I play, I have that much confidence in how good they sound. My playing days are over, spinal disease, stenosis and age have this month finally taken their toll, but oddly, my desire for good gear and guitars and constantly changing pickups like I do is still there.
A gear head at 65, with no gigs! I will miss the occasional attention, but hey, I had a good run!
