Unwound strings slipping out of tuners

My Tele has the kind of tuners that you poke the string down into, rather than through. So you cut the string beforehand, give it a couple extra inches and poke it down into the tuner. Went to re-string the other day and as I wound the unwound strings they all slipped out. This happened on 5 unwound strings in a row so I'm a little baffled. I've been re-stringing for 20 some years but am new to this style of tuner on guitar. Any ideas what went wrong and how to fix it?

Stick a toothpick in to secure the string before the slack is picked up and wind s l o w l y

I haven't had a Fender with those tuners do that. On those, you might either let the wraps go above the part going into the tuner, so the wraps push down on the string in the tuner, or just use a typically 'locking' type of wrap where you go over/under on the post and forget putting the string in.

ive never had that issue before and ive had a bunch of guitars with those tuners. how many wraps are you putting on? maybe its not enough? i cut the string, push it all the way into the hole, bend the string down so its resting on flat part of the tuner peg, then tune up. i always put at least three full wraps on these
