Re: Update and review: PGn and Custom in Strat

I wonder how the custom shop Lil' Pearly compares to the full size counterpart.

Artie says that the Lil' 59 and the full size 59 are very similar and I wonder if it's the same situation with the Pearly.

I'm only talking about neck versions here
thanks

Re: Update and review: PGn and Custom in Strat

Lew,
I had a Custom and found it "compressed" sounding. I then went to the 59 which seem to let the instrument breathe. However, I noticed that the lead qualitys were thin (probably due to the needing more mids?) I was thinking about the Custom again or the CC but I just can seem to get over that compressed thing. :help:

I use the Custom Custom myself, and I do find the Custom Custom to be a little compressed sometimes...I think it's just the pronounced mids more so than actually being compressed.

Don't hear the Custom that way though. It has strong mids but a nice dispersed sizzle to the treble. It overdrives my amps easily but I don't hear it as being overly compressed.

I love the 59B...it's one of my very favorite pickups for Clapton/Cream tone. Kind of depends on the amp you're playing it through...mine never sounds thin to me but all of my amps have alot of mids and overdrive easily.

I'm not a super high gain, saturated tone kinda guy...I'm not really after heavy metal or buzz saw type tones. I'm more of a blues/rock player and I like my lead tones to be overdriven but my clean tones very clean.

So I put the Custom in the bridge of my LP, with an Alnico 2 Pro in the neck. Sweet! Gives the LP a level of pop it didn't have before, and cleans up nicely for the blues. Great for ZZ Top and Aerosmith stuff.

Glad you like the Custom. I think it's a great pickup for just about anything. I don't hear it being overly compressed or overly bright or overly anything really. To me, the Custom sounds like a beefed up 59B with thicker mids.

If the Pearly Gates didn't exist, I'd probably go for the AIIPro as the neck pickup...but I do slightly prefer the PGn. The AIIPro is a great neck pickup.

Thanks! Lew

I haven't tried the Pearly Gates (yet!). The Alnico 2 Neck is really versatile, though. I can roll the volume knob down to about 3 to 5 and get almost a single coil sound out of it. Turn the volume up more and get a nice singing lead tone. Finally, when I have the amp on the clean channel, I roll the tone down to about 2 - 3 and get a nice, dark, almost jazz tone. I was surprised at how well it goes with a stonger pickup like the Custom. The middle position on the LP give some great tones.

Thumbs up for this thread -- it got me hooked on a Custom in my LP.:fing2:
