Re: Upgrading from 498t, need suggestions
Many of us here are mag swappers, most took to it naturally, a few had to be dragged kicking and screaming (oh, the excuses we've heard, and from grown men!). It makes so much more sense to change EQ's with a $3 mag, than to keep buying and selling PU's and crossing your fingers. As many have found out, buying a new PU often results in you having to face the same problems, or occasionally a new set of problems. If you have several kinds of mags on hand, you can dial in what you want in an hour, often in minutes.
Too much treble? Try a warmer magnet. Too warm? Try a brighter magnet. Works the same for mids, bass, a tight or soft low end, dynamics, output, etc. Every HB and P-90 has many personalities, you only see one with the stock mags. If a PU doesn't have the tones you want, change it's EQ a time or two with different magnets and see if that gives you what you want. Many times it does. It's very expensive to have the knee-jerk reaction of selling HB's without a mag swap. Equally bad to live with tones you're not thrilled about.
Welcome to mag swapping, you're opening the door to a new world of tones. You'll have so much more control over how you sound.
Gonna order some magnets today and try some experimenting.
