Upgrading single coils to humbuckers on strat clone

Been playing the guitar for about 20 years off and on. Never really got my fingers worked out :)

Pulled an old strat style Kramer Aerostar out of the closet that had been sitting around for years. It's a late 1987 Korean model, nothing to brag about thats for sure. Came stock with EMG select SSS config. One volume pot B500K and two tone pots D500k. (thought it was kind of weird to wire a SSS strat clone with 500k pots but oh well). Wanted to see how it sounded compared to my Ibanez RG321. Well of course it needed a lot of work. Considering it has no real value I just gave it a good walkthrough and tuneup, new strings, and a neck adjustment and Was suprised that it really wasn't too bad at all. Thought it might be a good piece to have when someone comes over and wants to jam a bit. Anyway, The humming from the single coils were pretty pronounced and I thought about maybe upgrading a pickup or two to humbucker. I can't afford to throw $300 worth of new screaming deamons in it. The guitar is a korean clone :) I thought about maybe upgrading the bridge pickup to a SD hotrails or something similar. I play more rock/hard rock. I've always played stock guitars so upgrades and customization is new for me. I know this is SD board but I've also read a lot about the Dimarzio chopper as an option. Some have suggested the Duncan designs scorcher pickup as a cheap $30 upgrade. Some have also suggested the GFS Neovins at about $30 each or $85 for a complete reworking of the guitar. Read a lot of positive things about them.

Anyway, what advice do you experts have for me. Keep in mind this is a Korean clone strat, it's physically in good shape but doesn't have much value. I am on a budget <$100 and I assume anything I choose will be an upgrade from the EMG select's.

from the description you gave, i'm assuming you play some sort of hard rock/metal/shred/ possibly classic rock assortment. i'd suggest humbuckers.
maybe check out rockfield pickups, they're typically $50 a piece. they have a basic selection of vintage-y pickups and high outputs. personally, if for a vintage tone from them, i'd go for a swc pickup(a5 magnet) in the neck and swv pickup(a2) in the bridge. for a fat high output tone, go for a fatass bridge and mafia neck, or just a fatass set.

****! Thats a nice quick response. Thanks.

Hey I just quickly glanced at Rockfield site and noticed that it appears all their pickups are twins. I should've stated in the OP that I was looking for a humbucker that came in a stacked config (single coil size) so that I don't have to cut my pick guard up. Unless I'm not seeing things correctly but it didn't appear that had any stacked HB's.

But you are correct in the type of music I play. I want a higher output humbucker (single coil sized). If I go SD or Dimarz then I'm looking at probably just the bridge pickup for about $70. Thats one of the reasons the GFS Neovin's kind of peaked my interest http://store.guitarfetish.com/coju20nepino.html. Maybe a Neo9 on the bridge and Neo 7's on the neck and middle.

Any other options worth considering?

Try to find something on EBAY. JB Jr or Hotrails. What exactly are you looking for tone wise? What is oyur set up?

Been looking on Ebay the last 4-5 days. Nothing really good has come up though. Most pickups on there are from online dealers that are selling them for the same price that musicians friend are selling them for. I don't understant why people spend the same price on ebay as they would from Guitarcenter or musicians friend. I could see buying ebay if you get something for a significant discount. Saw someone buy some Dimarzio HS-3's for $68. WTF? You can get them for $59 at a B&M store.

Oh well, I'll keep looking on ebay but unless something decent comes up soon I'll buy retail.

i too was interested in the geovins but i never pulled the trigger. Email Jay from guitar fetish and tell him what you are looking for. He has always gotten back to me pretty quick and provided accurate descriptions.
