USB midi keyboard...HELP!

Just got a M-Audio USB midi keyboard, but it doesn't seem to get noticed as a MIDI input in the computer...

It uses the USB cable for both power and Midi signals, it powers on normally and the driver installs when plugged into the computer. (and is visible in System/Device Manager)

But when launching a sequencer, rec. program etc. it won't get listed with the midi inputs... Anybody got any ideas what might be wrong?

Normally Cubase, but I didn't have access to my own computer. I used the crappy software that came with the keyboard just to test if it worked, but since I couldn't select it as "midi input" I didn't get to test it.

Shouldn't it be recognized as a midi input even if it uses a USB cable?

Well if you installed the software correctly then yes it should be recognized as a midi driver. Perhaps it will work with cubase.

I just had a similar problem with my Tascam interface. This may sound silly, but read the instructions to the "T". I just blindly put the disc in and loaded the software and after three hours of not getting Sonar or Cubase to recognize the interface, I reread the instructions to find out that you have to install the software FOUR TIMES--yes it's designed that way--before it can be used. Boy was I red faced! Works great now. Maybe your problem is something like that.

I hope you get it working quickly. It's a horrible frustrating feeling when you get new and expensive stuff and nothing talks to each other.

Yeah I know the feeling....I sat about 4 hours yesterday just trying to make it work... It's very annoying! :yell:

I read the instructions to a "T", many times...again, again and again. Can't find anything on their website either. :sad:

I'm quite a computer guy (geek, call it what you want ....) and this is about the simpliest thing to install since the drivers are WinXP certificated. Which means that the drivers that the keyboard uses are pre-installed and therefore there isn't any drivers on the CD that came with it.

Just like when you plug a USB memory stick into your USB port, it recognizes the keyboard as a "61es Keystation/USB Audio Device". But it isn't visible as a midi input/source...

Hopefully it will work with my own computer with Cubase. Help and advice is still greatly appreciated though!

Did you try it with the device manager? I mean searching for new hardware?

And does it show up at Sounds and Audiodevices at MIDI device select thingy?

(Sorry I can't describe that I have a German windiws version)

That's what is a bit wierd. It's recognized in the device mangaer as "USB Audio Device". It's visible when the keyboard is connected to the computer and turned on and dissapears as you turn it off/unplug it. That it should do... but it won't for anything in this world show upp as a MIDI device in programs or in the "Sound and Audio Devices" at Midi select thingy.

I will try to search for new hardware though just in case the driver would be only "half" installed. Recognized but not fully installed... Haven't got it connected now but I guess it's worth giving that a try tomorrow.

I had a similar problem yesterday with an m-audio keyboard. This suggestion is naïve, but it worked for me: make sure that the keyboard is connected before you launch Cubase. You should then be able to assign it as an input on a new midi track. If you plug it in later, there's no way of refreshing the midi devices. I've found that Windows' device manager can sometimes "see" midi devices that Cubase can't, in which case you need to play around with Cubase and relaunch it until it finds them. Hope this helps.

Thanks Merodack! Good to know that you have a M-audio keyboard and that it should be recognized and visible as a Midi Input...

I'll try again tonight, I might be that it is just the computer that is too crappy, it's quite old (even though that shouldn't be a problem really). But I will not be able to try it with my own computer and Cubase before 8th of January.

I'll write again and tell you guys how it works out!
