using 7st guitar pickup in a 4string bass

Hello all,

I have the following situation

* I have an old cheap bass that i am sentimental about and i like it but it not a good bass. Its pickups and electronics are a bit crappy. I tried to bypass the elexctronics but still with no tangible effect (Ibanez SRX300 made in 2004) It serves now as my guinea pig (i self-teach myself to setup a bass on it etc. or mess with the electronics or generally play with DIY ideas)

*i have been given as a gift a set of Duncan Designed Soapbars HB105 pickups from a 7 string schecter guitar. I understand that they are a korean-made version of the blackouts for OEM. They fit exactly in the pu socket.

Is it a good idea to install them in this bass? Even as an experiment ?

If yes, what values should the pots and the capacitors have? (i have the original pots from schecter. they are A25K and the capacitor 100nF)

Thank you in advance!
(I know that the correct solution is to buy a good set of proper bass pickups... i just dont have the money now but i have the HB105s)

Welcome to the forum!

I say, do it! Experiment, and share your experience- it may help other people considering the same type of thing. Worst that can happen is that you lose a bit of time, but you gain experience.

I will do it of course. The subliminal question was "does anyone has any experience on this thing ?Is it totally stupid or worth a shot ?"

Any advice on the caps/pots ?

Could work. Might even work well.

Btw, if you drop money on real blackouts for bass soapbars, they might work quite well. Seymour actives are surprisingly powerful in cheap lightweight Ibanez beginner basses.

PS caps and pots? What do you mean? Just use the ones that came with the pups. Or are you talking about the blend pot for pickup mixing?

The capacitors in the tone knob (as far as i know )control the tone-centre frequency. So i do not know if it is a good idea to use the same for bass as it was for guitar.

I also read that changing the pots to 50K or even 100K changes the sound but i do not have any experience on this.

I will finally use the following configuration: volume - blend -tone neck- tone bridge but i cant find a blend pot cheaply and locally right now. so i may do it like : volume brdge - volume neck- tone b -tone n and if I like the sound i will fix it later.

Do you know what resistance value should the blend have in case i insert one ? 25K ?

PS i started the project last night , I will provide updates before the weekend :-)

Blends are weird... for some reason I've seen 250k blends work just fine with active pickups.

Dunno why and dunno if it applies to all actives.

I have a 500K blend pot right now. But i will try first the volume-volume tone tone config and then i will mod it. i wait for the caps and the pots to arrive.
