Using a boss sd-1 in a solid state

I had a question about using the boss sd-1 overdrive pedal in a crate tube amp awhile back. Someone on the forum suggested I turn the gain down on the pedal and the level all the way up to overdrive the preamp. Will this concept work in a solid state amp. I am playing through a dime head and I play mainly metal and hard rock. I have been messing around with different pedals and settings. I have a boss 7 band eq in the fx loop and can't determine if the dime sound is with a frown shape or smile within the eq. My main question is that does a solid state have a preamp that would react to the overdrive pedal the way I describe or is that mainly used to manipulate a tube amp?

Every amp has a preamp.

To answer your question - 99.9% of the time, it'll sound like ****. But try it anyway, you never know.

I used a bunch of different ODs into my Music Man amp, including the SD-1, and I can say for sure that it made them sound great. Not all SS amps are like a cheap Peavey.

thats true. i used to run a tube screamer into my musicman 210 sixty five and it sounded creamy as hell.

trial and error if you have all the gear already why ask us? plug in and figure it out at the end of the day your ears are the judge of right and wrong only you can answer how well you like something. With that said I'm a big fan of the BD2 and SD1 pedals however I feel they really shine once modded 1. it helps with the bypassed tone 2. it helps in general (this part varies depending on the mods you do I like Analogman and keeley)

I like using a myriad of dirt pedals in front of SS amps but I will say that nothing beats a good tube rig.
