Using my crate v3112T

When i use my amp the "overdrive" channel doesn't have much distortion to it. So i often use it for like low level distortion like lynyrd skynyrds simple man.

But what i'm wondering, is it normal to use it along with say a more heavy distortion on my boss me 50 (ds1) to get a more natural sounding distortion (tube like)?

It seems like doing this gives me a good sound. I get my black box hopefully this friday so i can try posting a clip maybe to compare with to get a better opinion.

Also, what is the boost thing used for specifically, well besides making my ears hurt from all the trebble heh.

Thanks!

Re: Using my crate v3112T

Without hearing the amp its hard to make a call. I have a V32 with the GC tan and gold and I get quite a bit of gain from the amps overdrive channel. Normally I don't run it past maybe 2 oclock on the gain and 9 oclock for the level. For more beef I have a TS9 that I set to get the gain up even higher.

The boost is basically just a 6 db (to my ears) clean type boost like you would get with a mild overdrive pedal. It adds a bit of level and some guts to the clean tone for more of a pushed rythm sound and on the overdrive channel it adds a little heat and fattens things up, like a solo boost would. I don't notice any brightness and if anything my amp gets warmer with the boost on.

What I end up with is 8 different gain settings:

Clean
Pushed (slightly dirty - boost on clean)
Distorted rhythm (TS9 on clean)
Mark I type lead (TS9 and boost on clean)
Marshall type crunch (overdrive channel)
Hot Marshall crunch (OD channel + boost)
Marshall lead (OD channel + TS9)
Hot Marshall lead ( OD + TS9 + boost)

Normally I run my volumes at 9 - 10 oclock
Treble 4 oclock
Mids max
Bass 1-2 oclock

I can pull of a very convincing STP type tone without even trying with those settings and the TS9. None of my gain levels are anywhere near maxed and I'm sure that by pulling the mids a bit and jacking up the gain on the amp and on the TS9 that I could get convincing metal tones out of it as well.

Maybe you have a bad tube, your amp should have quite a bit of gain and a normally warm voice, especially with the boost on.

I have the same basic amp....V-32 Palomino. I feel the amp has plenty of gain for classic rock and blues, it is not really voiced for metal.

How do you have the gain and master set to get your overdrive?

The boost is just a basic volume boost, although mine seems to push the mids a bit if I use it.

I mainly use various OD units (check my sig) for my OD tones instead of the 2nd channel, whick I set up for jut a slight bit of dirt.
PM me if you wish to ask some questions and I'll try to help.....Joe

Re: Using my crate v3112T

I have my gain set at like 7 out of 10 i believe, past that it gets noisy. Then since i'm in apartment i can hardly turn my volume up so that could be a bit of it.

The type of distortion i've been using it for is like in bush's greedy fly/swallowed. I'll try it out in a week or so at my parents turned up more too.

EQ
Treble 6
Mid 5
Bass 3

Guitars
Stock sheraton II
Jackson with lil 59/Cool Rail/Pearly Gates

Seems the lil 59er is probably the best for getting more distortion out of the amp

Re: Using my crate v3112T

You'll probably need to get the master at about 9 o'clock to get a decent tone and that is much louder than living room levels. I would suggest an OD or distortion pedal at least for low volume playing. Pushing the mids also helps give it a little kick in the backside.

Re: Using my crate v3112T

I'm not familiar with that unit.......any setting that is based on a Marshall type tone should get you in the ballpark.

Re: Using my crate v3112T

the DS-1 will help, it's a good pedal for these types of applications.
Good luck with the amp bro!

Re: Using my crate v3112T

Which distortion/overdrive would you recommend me using on my boss me 50 to do that?
Maybe an SD-1 or Green DRIVE (TUBE SCREAMER) if it has it or a volume boost if it has that too just set the gain low and volume high (ON THE STOMPBOX SECTION OF THE ME-50)
