Using PA Enclosure as guitar cab ?

Ok noob questions coming up so beware...

I might be getting a Peavey SP5ti 15" with horn enclosure with 8 ohm full range inputs for free. I was curious if I could plug my 100 watt solid state or 15 watt tube head with speaker cable into this enclosure safely ? The speaker in it is rated at 500 watts.

I also have a Joyo british at the end of my pedalboard and was wondering if there was a way to plug direct from my pedalboard into the Peavey enclosure ?

I play super bassy fuzzy stuff so this speaker will work perfect for me power wise.. I know the general answer to this thread will be "it will sound like crap" but I'm sure I can find a use for it as long as its safe to do ! I keep reading its bad to match low powered heads into higher powered speakers

Yeah I'm not expecting it to sound amazing but with the Joyo preamp with speaker emulation on set clean I'm hoping I can EQ a usable tone even for practice. Its a 15" Peavey scorpion speaker in it

If you must use that I'd suggest bypassing the crossover and the horn and going straight into the woofer. There's a reason guitar cabinets don't have a high frequency driver. If the woofer's impedance isn't marked take a DC resistance reading. It will read a few ohms lower than the speakers impedance. So a 16ohm would likely read about 13-14 and a 8 ohm about 6.

Thanks so if I use just the woofer it will be 6 ohm load ? I'm not the best with ohms and impendence matching I admit!

it says on the back 8 ohm impendence with 2 Full range inputs and then 2 HI and LO bi amp inputs..

I'd suggest trying it out with full speakers before deciding on only using the woofer. You might like the tone of it. I love abrasive guitar sounds, personally.

Plenty of guitar players use Leslie cabinets and they have horns. I used a Roland Keyboard Cube 60 with a 12 and a horn for a while and the thing rocked. The horn really caught the highs and let me do a lot of really cool controlled feedback stuff. I would give is a try with the crossover before tinkering around and rewiring it, you might like the sound.

yea, and there's always the ability to roll the treble off at a few points along the signal path too.

Try it with the Joyo with speaker sim into the amp into the FULL RANGE input. You may find that a slight cut at 2kHz on a graphic EQ will make the tone a little less strident if that becomes a problem. The Peavey horns are know for having a peak in this area.

If it is too bright, by all means try the LO bi-amp input to bypass the X-over and the horn, taking your signal straight into the woofer. You may find you need to add a bit of high end to this set-up. Good Luck!

Thanks very informative !

I will try my pedalboard with joyo at the end going into the Peavey.. This Enclosure might be useful for bass too as I have no bass amp and always want to plug in a bass at home for fun so now I will have that option. I always have my Hughes and Kettner Statesman 2x12 guitar cab but I figured for free why not take it and find some use for it!

just to be clear would I use my regular instrument cable going from Joyo to the peavey or would I use a Speaker cable ?

You'll still need an amp of some sort to drive the cabinet; the signal from a pedal will be barely audible if you can hear it at all. Tonewise, unless you like your guitar sound ratty you probably won't want to use the horn unless you're playing clean. Bass OTOH should work better.

I would say just try it.
Not sure how much gain that slings...the speaker cable might be noisy/sound bad...but you will have the upper hand, with experience, after you give it a shot.:cool:

I thought he was going to run it into the M80, then the M80 to the speaker. Plenty of push from those fuzzy S.O.B.s.

Oh I'll definitely do that if there won't be a lot of volume going directly into it from the Joyo British. I can use the m-80 as a power amp too and just plug the Joyo into the Power amp in on the m-80 and then that into the peavey speaker..

Well it will be interesting to say the least. I will let you guys know how it goes once I get it sometime this weekend

That's the way to go. The output of your pedal probably won't be audible, and it'll probably sound like sh*t if it is.

I would pop the M-80 on top of the cab, crank the gain, dial in a decent EQ and go for broke.

my buddy ran the speaker out of his Fender Twin into a Peavey SP2 15

sounded alright to me

Good to hear!

I'm sure I can EQ it to sound decent, worst case scenario it just becomes a bass cab for me..

The Joyo isn't an amplifier; you'll need to connect a GUITAR cable from the Joyo out to the POWER AMP IN of your M-80 (or some other amplifier) and the connect the SPEAKER OUT of the M-80 to the Peavey, using a SPEAKER cable.

This is correct.

You can use the Peavey for a bass cab speaker. You will probably want to go from an amplifier's SPEAKER OUT to the BIAMP LO, bypassing the horn. You can go FULL RANGE, but my bet is that you will like it best into the BIAMP LO.

Do not plug your amp into the BIAMP HI; you will blow out the horn.

You can also use this speaker as a side fill monitor or main for a PA. The speaker has a PROGRAM power rating on the jackplate--use this as a guide as to the size of amplifier you'll need for best results.

You can also use it as a speaker for a keyboard, like a Casio or Yamaha. It may take some figuring out, regarding patch cables and such, but it can be done. One of my old buds in Seattle back in the day used a Peavey XR-600C Mixer top box into an SP2 for his keyboard and it sounded great.

Thanks Bill, great advice as always..

I will try taking my amps into the peavey Bi amp LO input and bypass the horns first. The Bi AMP LO input is still 8 ohms correct?
