Using solder with flux?

I was shopping for an iron and solder at Ace Hardware and saw that make a 60/40 rosin core solder with flux. Should I use sodler with flux for soldering pickup wires to pots? From what I've read, it looks like it would help with regard to a more stable connection regarding the solder/wire/pot. From what i understand, flux prevents oxidation.

No, just use plain rosin core.

Using Flux distributes the heat more evenly. Flux will never hurt a solder joint.

I always brush liquid rosin on the joint before soldering, for the reasons above. It helps the solder flow, making actual heating times shorter than relying on the rosin in the core of the solder. The rosin in the solder often seems too dry, and borderline adequate.

That said, most of the time, one can get away not adding the additional rosin flux. Guitars are rather ugly/sloppy in their interiors, and the components are large. Adding flux is more apparent on pc board projects, where the compontents are more easily dammaged by heat, the number of joints are greater, and the consistency (and beauty of the final product) are more apparent.

I don't use flux.

Helps to use good solder like Kester, instead of the stuff RadioShack sells.

I try to make the connection solid, even without the solder, and then place the soldering iron so it heats up both things being soldered together. Then when you add the solder, it should flow the way you want without any help.

Yes, you do want the solder w/ flux. As it's already been stated, it helps the heat be distributed equally, and keeps whatever you're heating from instantly oxidizing.

It's always a good idea to have liquid flux, and add some to any joints you're touching up. Also, if you ever use de-soldering braid, put liquid flux on it first. The de-soldering will go significantly faster and better.

Making sure all your joints are solid prior to soldering (and then soldering properly) will all but eliminate problems. Solder should not be treated as glue.
