V-neck shape

Anyone every played one? How does that feel? Sounds quite uncomfortable to me actually... or rather unflexible... like you can only have one hand position or something.

tell me...

thanks

Re: V-neck shape

my brother has an old acoustic with a v shaped neck, it was really weird and uncomfortable to me. ive also played a jimmy vaughn strat (soft v) and an eric clapton neck (v shape) and they weren't really my thing personally. just see if you can finda guitar with one and try it out. give it a few minutes to grow on you and if it doesnt it might not be your thing

Re: V-neck shape

Coming from a Flamenco / Classical background, I could never get on
with V necks, that was until a few years ago when I fell in love with a US 57
RI Strat, albeit with a mild V.
Given that I was NEVER a thumb over player and always adhered to the
strict classical technique, it took a bit of time and an open mind.
I can still comfortably play with my thumb in the middle of the neck
and also relax my grip and thumb over as the need / desire requires.
Since I started putting electric guitars together, I've experimented with many
shapes and can now get along with almost any neck shape.
I've purpoely put different neck shapes on my guitars to give them some
character and personality to highlite the individuality.
Got an 80's shredder strat with assymetrical shape, very thin but thicker
over the D & A strings, a thin soft V Levison Blade strat, a hard V, slightly
on the thicker side tele and a quite thick D shaped LP clone.
My acoustic necks are different again, steel string, Flamenco, classical....

Give it a fair try, you might get to like it and it does lend itself to quite a few
left hand techniques.

Cheers,
Will.

Re: V-neck shape

I own an old Boogie Bodies neck that is modeled after old Strat V shapes and I own a couple of Deans with V shape necks. I like them but I dont play any of them long enough to cause hand fatigue or discomfort. I feel like on those guitars it gives me a comfortable spot for my thumb and allows the rest of my hand a sense of freedom.

Give them a try that's for sure.

Re: V-neck shape

Closest thing I've played was one of the original Music Man Luke signature guitars. It played really nice although I prefer a little more meat on the neck.

I didn't feel like it hindered playing at all though.

Re: V-neck shape

All the necks i get from USACG have a very pronounced V on them. I find that it fits my hand very nicely. Id recommend it for anyone who likes to play using their thumb for the low E and/or A strings.

Re: V-neck shape

I like the one on my Clapton strat- to me it's the most comfortable neck I have

Re: V-neck shape

I like v necks cause you can lay your thumb down the length toward the neck and just relax it when you stay in one position for a while.

Re: V-neck shape

I see... sounds interesting. I'll see if I can get my hands on some V-neck Strat at my dealer.

Thanks for all your comments.
