V1 is usually always a safe term to use for the first preamp spot.
However in ENGL amps for example, V1 is the first power tube, and V5 is the first preamp tube.

A more accurate name for the first preamp tube would be the Input tube. You're right though, it alway either starts on the guitar input jack side of the amp or is positioned closest to the guitar input jack.

I'm still laughing beside myself. Well at least I got the V2 and PI spots correct, hahaha.

I'm a tube noobie and I recently purchased a VHT Special 6 Ultra. Can someone explain where V1 is located. Is it the one located closest to the 6V8?

BTW, I have the combo in case it makes a difference.

Thanks mwalluk. I already swapped the Chinese stock V2 for a Tung-Sol 12AX7. Hoping to nab a 5751 on Ebay, if I don't get a good price I'll probably order a 12AY7 to tame the OD and hopefully extend the clean sounds a bit.

You may want to considered putting the Tungsol in the V1 spot. It's a solid tube for that location. Also may want to try Mullard RI. I actually prefer those the best for all locations. Since my heads a single channel and I need to roll back the volume for clean, those tubes work the best. They have the headroom needed, actually helped my clean out a lot. They have the necessary bite when switched to lead humbucker, volume up but it's also tammed.

I may just do that, I have an EH12AX7 that I could swap it for. Well, at least that will hold me over until I order a 5751 or 12AY7 to give me more clean headroom.
