Valve pedal into a solid state amp?

patch

Has anyone ever done this? How close is this to giving a a valve channel? I'ma asking because i'm thinking about getting a hughes and kettner blue 15r amp and driving it with a DHA overdrive pedal. Solid state appeals more as i need to be able to practice quietly. Also i think the hughes and kettner amps have beatiful cleans.

Re: Valve pedal into a solid state amp?

I've tried it a few years ago. It does help to warm up the sound
of a solid state amp. However, it will not be as good as a real tube
amp. But in a low volume situations it could do ok. Maybe you should
try it first in a music store because tube pedals are expensive?

Re: Valve pedal into a solid state amp?

I have a Twin Tube classic running into my SS Peavey. Sound is very good. As good as a Tube amp ? Prolly not. But, it is way better than the SS amp ever sounded for the medium to high gain (not quite metal) stuff I want (It sounded great before with my Digitech for High gain Metal)
So if the amp has a good clean channel, It should sound very good.

Re: Valve pedal into a solid state amp?

Thanks guys, i'm a big fan of the hughes and kettner clean channels (actually the distortion is not too bad) so this may be the way to go. There does not seem to be a whole lot of choice when it comes to valve pedals, the only ones i've noticed are: vox, seymour d, and DHA on e bay. Does anyone know of any others?

The best sounding ones I looked at were the seymour duncan, the damage control, and the Hughes and Kettner.
Both the HK and the damage control have cab sims built in, which in my case I did not need (live I wil use a cab sim but wanted it to be seperate so i can place effects in the order I want)
HK is 3 channel, and to me might have the best sound. Priced at $400 it is also the most expensive. Saw the DC Womanizer on music123 for about $190 (open box), and was very tempted. But when bypassed (for cleans) it turns off the cab sim, and that output. So the cab sim would basically not work for me at all. And I think just the tube part, the SD is better.
Ended up getting a used SD Twin Tube for $75, and could not be happier. I will likely add a HK red box later for direct with cab sim.

Check out:
Maxon
Tonebone
Electro Harmonix
A few Ibanez models (Tube Kink is the name, if I'm right)
Rocktron have one model

I have a feeling I'm forgetting someon important... but I think that this list might be enough for now...
It's not a bad idea this combination... but a tube pedal into an all-tube amp is even better.

Mesa Boogie has V-Twin pedal, which has three different sounds.
Used to have one, but sold it years ago when I bought a real tube
amp.

The damage control pedal is interesting me a lot. Cool clips and video on the website
