Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

Wonder if ed used this LP jr at all on VH1?

Which of these two pickups would be the closest to the Van halen 1 sound(first album).Im using the Duncan Custom SH-5 right now and it seems to be fine but would the Dimarzio Super Distortion get me closer.

A VH1 album and a turntable will get you very, very close.

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

Ed H,im not upset I just need to venture on and keep trying diffenent things.I do have a new Seymour Duncan Custom SH-5 in black with no logo on the pickup thats how I ordered it,if interested pm me,Thanks.........

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

None of the clips that are out there(many)have achieved the Van halen 1 sound(first album) so you keep trying.

That is the problem right there.

Plenty of people have nailed the sound, but others caught up in the chase refuse to accept that.

Let it go man, and just order a Bray or Rockstah modded Marshall.

Done

Try the DSD everyone in the know seems to say it is the same thing as the mighty mite eddie used on the 1st record but beyond that i dont know of any pup that will do that tone exact.
I suppose the best thing to do s track down a MM1300 screamer on ebay they show up from time to time there sometimes real cheap!

Here you go- as close as your are going to get without being Eddie or having THE PRODUCTION VALUES of the studio and engineer (Templeman).

People don't place enough emphasis on Studio magic.

Just a helatious amp, a guitar, a good player, and a 78. This will get you half of the albums tone- A stock sen wood Destroyer will do the rest- assuming you're up to the task

not to turn this into a pissing contest but this guy gets even closer to VH 1

he is using a dimarzio super D in a ash strat with a floyd

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

Any of those amps will get you there...they are all impressive. And it's obvious that you can get in the ballpark with good playing, whether you've got PRS pickups in a Mahogany Les Paul or a Super Distortion/'78 in an Ash Strat.

Pitbull, you're chasing a rainbow, my friend. Time to buckle down and set a realistic goal for yourself. If you haven't got the tone you're seeking and you've tried everything that's been suggested (and all the things you listed), then the missing piece of the puzzle might be...YOU.

Play on, my friends...

Sounds good!!! Wish the same clip could be done with a PAF type pickup[78,59,etc...] to compare!

I'm sure this is nitro from TGP and other forums.

There's no point engaging this person in discussion. Dave Friedman and John Suhr (who have actually worked on Eddie's amp and might be considered to have a modicum of authority) can't make even the slightest dent in his views, so you don't have a chance.

At times I've wondered whether he's actually a bot? Is someone behind the bot is having a good laugh? Even the threads he's started here, compare his posts, is it the same cluster of sentences being rearranged slightly each time? I tend towards thinking it's a real person, but...

I don't want anyone's head to explode, but I never thought Ed's early tone was the be all, end all anyway.

Good yes, but no where near worth all this drama.

Personally for me, George Lynch's cranked Marshall tone on BFTA is much better.

to me it opened the door to a RAW over the top marshall ready to explode.
I am too busy trying to get my own thing going with my marshall that is every bit as good as his VH 1. it can be done. there was a lot of studio mix involved with that tone, mike anthony said quote "ed's sound in the studio that day was ear piercing trebly, hurt my ears!" people hear the record and think thats what it sounded like there live, NOT!!!!!!!!

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

I was more blown away by the awesomeness of KISS 1978 than Van Halen. :D I then moved to Ozzy, and then got heavy into Van Halen (1982ish).

I love early VH, but it is just not the benchmark for me.

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

If you watch VH vids from the early 80's ('81-'83), Ed's sound has a lot of treble in it and not very much gain at all. His tone is very bright and very clean with very little break up

This is as close to Ed's tone that you're gonna get....the rest is in your hands and technique

VHholic- a (former?) member here used to have a great website where he would cop early VH tones with various guitars, pickups, and amps. He was able to get a 5150 there (with greenbacks). He'd actually record himself over various VH tracks, was pretty amazing.

Exactly what I am saying, just buy a cheap reissue plexi and send it off to Rackstah.

Done.
