Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

7-8 years ago when a VH thread popped up in the pickup lounge the Super D and Custom were never spoken about to cop the VH tone. Back then it was usually the CC,59 and as it was called then the EVH custom shop

Yeah you are right, but it really seems that the mghty mite was used on the black/white charvel on the first record. the guitar at that time looked like this it wasn't striped yet

He said he used a '58 Strat for a while and just took the bridge off and put it on Frankie. He also used Fender necks on Frankie, so that could be what's in the picture. He may have just jacked the pickguard from the old Strat and this guitar could be a jumble of the Fender and Frankie. What was that zebra pup? He was procuring PAF's at the time. Maybe it's a Gibson... ya never know.

If you look at the upper horn of the strat in that pic you will see it is the same cut as the charvel ash body. that is the frank before it got striped. this was debated and finalized at metroamp forum ,the home of the EVH know it alls! LOL!! The pup is a zebra gibson P.A.F

chris in all aspects of their construction and materials they are the same thing with one big difference, the earlier MM's were said to be wound by seymour:naughty:

The Mighty Mite Screamer was basically a clone of the Super D. Allegedly Eddie used them live for a while in the club days. I personally think VH1 could have been.... A. A 50w amp juiced up to get more gain... Sunset Sound had lots of amps. B. A hot pickup and Ed was lying about preferring PAF's and 'hating DiMarzio Distortion pickups'... C. A distortion/overdrive box, as Jose Arrandon..uh.. that amp guy said and Ed was lying about that too or D. a bunch of studio tricks and any or all of the above or E. If you are Eddie Van Halen you can get that tone from a Peavey practice amp and a First Act guitar. Or... F. I need a beer.

Really? :lmao:

That's too funny.

Yeah, Sterling got tired of putting up with threads like that a long time ago.

Those Rockstah amps are pretty neat though. Bray's amps sound good but are very percussive sounding, which may be good if you have a light touch.

"Nitro" is on the Rockstah amps forum as well asking the same questions...

actually in ed's defense he said QUOTE,

"So I got a DiMarzio pickup, and I don't really go for those, because they're real distorted. See, I like a clean sound, but with sustain. I hate the fuzz box, real raspy sound. I don't particularly go for that. The DiMarzio pickups have real big magnets that's how they get their power"

here is what he said in regards to the P.A.F's

"I'd do anything to get an old P.A.F. They're the best. They go for 100, 200 bucks apiece, but that's what I use, that's what I like. A lot of people don't like them. See, with my setup, it's matched. Like if I play my guitar through someone else's setup, it won't sound right. And if I use someone else's guitar through my setup, it won't sound right."

The pickup, it turned out, was a Gibson P.A.F. extracted from a 1961 Gibson ES-335. “I had the coil rewound to my specifications,”

This last comment i gather is referring to the seymour rewind that became the 78?
These comments were made AFTER the recording of the 1st record was already finished and being sold and Van halen was just starting their frist world tour so who knows,
Me personally I think eddie used the hotter MM and dimarzio ceramics until he started rollin in some cash then found a way to make the P.A.F work for him starting on the first tour and second album. you can hear the P.A.F on VH II no problem. it doesnt have that high end fizz any longer that ceramics typically get.
what strikes me as odd is the comment about dimarzio's being distorted??? a pup is not distorted,if it is a high output model it will hit the pre amp section harder causing more breakup, but the pup itself is not sending distortion? i guess he meant when he tried to roll off the volume knob and it stayed dirty?

anyway by the time they started the first tour eddie had a P.A.F in the frank like here, this pic is from the day on the green 1978 with aerosmith, pat travers, ted nugent, etc

Ampwise a Splawn Quick Rod will get you in the ballpark too on Gear 1 mode.

As for pickups and guitars, that's been covered MORE than enough already in this thread as well as countless others :D

Wow...Pittbull has multiple personalities and they are all obsessed with the same thing!

I can imagine the voices in his head going back and forth at night, asking eachother the exact same questions about Eddie's tone, giving eachother the same answers and then telling eachother that they are wrong...

Sorry, Pittbull, didn't realize you had it so bad! I'll go easy on you from now on...

Yeah, saw that yesterday, Budd's response pretty much nails it.

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

I figured the SH-5 had as much lowend as the Super. They say it doesn't. It has more then a duncan distortion right?
