The problem is one of two things...

Everybody knows the secret to Eddies tone comes from the tobacco to filler content of his smokes as it drifts across the magnets of his pups**. When he started smoking lights, around the time of the 5150 album, his tone went to $hit, and it's never been the same since.
Yes, the real change in his tone has come from the Tobacco Industry , and it's over regulation by the U.S. Government. Any of us Southern Boys who grew up in the Tobacco belt can tell you- hand rolled (tobacco) smokes from fresh cut & dried tobacco are the ultimate for tone. The crap you buy in 7-11 is a total tone-suck.
** And this is why Brian Robertson's tone has always rocked from day 1, and does still today

We should petition PaperJamz to do an EVH model, and include 3 songs from VH1 and decals of different pickups.

Problem is, even if the PaperJamz guitar played actual VH1 songs straight from the album, Pittbull (Nitro) would still say it didn't sound like Van Halen and want to know what he could do to it to make it sound "closer"!

"What do I intend to do with it",I would use it as my overall sound,wouldnt yourself and others do the same.It is in my opinion that the Van halen 1(first album) sound is the most amazing guitar sound ever created,the first time you heard Van halen 1 didnt it blow your mind.There are some well named guitarist who are still trying to achieve that tone.There is no guitar tone out there that compares to that sound.If the van halen 1 sound didnt exsist my second chose has always been Matthias Jabs tone from the Scorpions.Anyway why would any of you care to begin with.......:scratchch

I would not use someone elses tone for my own. i copied his tone to make my own out of. I like my tone more than VH1,it is punchier than that recorded tone. not saying i dont think that VH 1 is not a awesome tone.

it had more to do with WHO was playing it than the actual tone IMHO
If another player had used that tone it would have never had the same impact as it did with Ed playing it

I don't think i've ever tried to copy somebodys sound. I just kinda stumbled onto a sound I liked playing with gear, and have used it ever since.

nothing wrong with that, i am sure that at one point evh coped claptons tone but wound up with his own. it dont matter if you cop the other persons tone as long as you go from there and make your own. look at all the guys that have that sig sound angus,lynch,yngwie,slash, and a s**t load of others. havin your own tone is just is important as your own style of playing goes hand in hand for me,all the greats have this

I realise it contradicts the dogma that has built up around this tone since, but honestly no, the first time I heard it I didn't like it very much. My first reaction was "Too much treble, too much reverb, what happened to the bass guitar?". It grew on me later.
But I was a bit too young when VH1 came out, the first VH tones I heard were 1984, which I still prefer the sound of. Ah well, subjectivity.

I probably did base my sound off Megadeth and Metallica when i was a kid, and went from there. I always listened to them and Iron Maiden.
