Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

If I had to buy another amp it would be from mark(Rockstah),I believe out of all the van halen modded amps out there marks amp is the closest to the van halen sound, his amp has that van halen flavor but needs alittle more magic for the van halen 1 sound(first album),its close though.

Ed H,i believe that the 78 pickup is a interpetation of what duncan thinks it is,(believeing more of Eds BS in early interviews) I dont hear that pickup on Van halen 1,especially alnico II.That pickup(78)didnt come out until the early 2000s.Why would seymour wait that long from the mid-late 70s until 2000.

Of those 2 isolated clips, I'm the One is much smoother and more compressed sounding. Hard to tell how much is studio magic vs the guitar tone. I would honestly be surprised if there wasn't a pedal in there somewhere, maybe Ed will make a deathbed confession someday (not that I'm hoping for that anytime soon...). I have heard whispers of a Distortion + being used, given the time frame, that would be the logical choice.

yeah he is almost there 100%, i think he will probably be the guy that does "nail it"
everyone else over at metro says that ralle is the closest but i totally disagree

Devastone,Ed did favor MXR pedals why not the MXR Distortion + script logo.

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

Ed H,the majority of guys that post at metro amp in the van halen section believe alot of Eds BS,and then there wondering why there not achieveing the tone.If you give them some good information they think your nuts.

so it is just part of the "jumpin on the bandwagon" with those other bootekk guys that are doing early VH pu winds?
you dont think eddie had anything to do with it's inception then?

yeah back them everyone and their mothers were using a D+ or a tube screamer. you had the big muff, the D+,tube screamer and maybe one or two more OD units but not many. randy used the D+ with his marshalls and i think George used one too?

No not at all,its just marketing and assumptions. They should tell people that call duncan that are looking for the van halen 1 sound, unless there looking for Eds later sound that the Duncan Custom SH-5 would be the closest to the Van halen 1 sound not the Custom Custom which they tell people most of the time, the custom custom would be good for Eds present sound not for van halen 1.

Perhaps one "secret" was Donn Landee using a Urei 1176LN compressor on the first record and perhaps NOT on the next few. The first record sounds compressed and "sweetened", whereas VHII sounds more raw and "spread out". Some attribute it to a pickup alone, but I suspect, especially the Eruption track, used the Urei compressor. Supposedly those were magic units, didn't kill pick attack and were "more open" than other kinds. You could probably get a similar shimmer from something like the Seymour Duncan "doubleback" comp, where you can dial in some dry tone into the compressed signal.

Ed very well could have used the re-wound Duncan on the first record but the STUDIO TRICKS created a guitar tone that gave Templeman a hardon... but Ed has stated many times he didn't like it. That's why we get "the real deal" on VHII and onward.

I prefer to use the custom for that tone myself like i told you in the other thread you posted about the VH1 tone. It has that growl and scream that i on hear on VH1 more than the DSD does.

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

Thats true give it a try and if it doesnt work out someone will buy it.

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

First, why did that guy put up a vid of his playing? Just horrible lol. And I believe Eds sound was more his style of playing. His setup probably just sounded decent at best, if you played through it.

well believe it or not i bought it because it is a overwound PAF not really because of the VH factor. I like hotter PAF's and always have.

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

Ianballard,Landee and Templeman used the 1176 compressor from van halen 1 to Fair warning also may have used it on Diver down.

well at least it made me feel better about my own playin!:naughty:
every time i get depressed guitar about and say to myself i
cant play for s**t i find someone like that dude who sucks worse than me!:laugh2:

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

It was a conspiracy! The whole thing!

Ed didn't really play on the album...that's just what the government wants you to believe!

What you hear on the album is really a layering of over 1,000 guitarists from around the world, sworn to secrecy under common oath of the International EVH Society.

Various amps, guitars, styles, environments (including the moon, thanks to a joint arrangement between NASA and the USSR) and effects, as well as spiritual influence from psychics, mystics, wizards and even the undead during final mixing were used to achieve the sound on the album.

It's absolutely impossible to duplicate and the real reason Ed doesn't know how to get his own tone is because it wasn't really "his"!!!

I think George was using a DS-1, they came out around '78 too, I know it was his go to pedal for a long time. The old ones are definitely smoother than the new ones. The Rat was out then too, but neither Ed's or G's tone has a "rat-ty" tone to them.
