Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

You will get people that have nothing better to do to post BS,every forum has them. They have no interest in what we are talking about.

The pedals that were out back then were the Boss OD-1 came out in 77,the Mxr Distortion +came out in the early 70s all of the Electro Harmonix stuff, the tubescreamers didnt come out until 79,the Rat pedal was in 81 or 83,Marshall had a fuzz unit, the Dod 250 was in the 70s,what else,I will think of more, the popular ones are listed.

Not you Ed h..........

cool cause i am genuinely interested in his tone on that album. it was the at that time the "END ALL" for the marshall overdriven tone. everyone was going WTF???
he had every guitar player that owned a plexi scratchin their heads and seems like that is still the case 34 years later!:eyecrazy: i always wondered what he thinks of accomplishing that? :cool2:

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

One thing that i will never understand is someone post's a clip of the first record tone with a ash strat with the fender trem and the maple board and the right pup but they play one of the tunes that he used the destroyer on?
WTF?:smash::butkick::kabong:

True,or someone is talking about the van halen 1 sound and post a clip, the song there playing is panama from 1984,I would say to myself they have no clue.

yeah thats what i mean, eddie had MANY tones. so when i see a post and it says VH1 tone nailed and they are playing hot for teacher i just LMAO
HFT was with a stock 58 V with untouched PAF's needless to say it is NOTHING like the VH 1 tone.:28:

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

I agree.........

what i hear all these years on just VHI is a marshall that is not just dimed(everything on max) but something else pushin it further. The variac did not add gain,it was lowered as i am sure you already know.
If jose did something to it he and ed could have had a mutual agreement to never disclose what exactly was done to it, or maybe he did use a OD box of some sort. If he did it was gone by the second record.

Yes,100%,overdrive-distortion on van halen 1.Remember there are no photos of van halen recording van halen 1 but there is that photo of van halen in the studio recording van halen II.

Re: Van halen 1 sound Duncan Custom SH-5 or Dimarzio Super Distortion

I also dont think ed got involved with A2's until he got turned on to the floyd:naughty:

That photo was taken by the famous Neil Zolzower,I think I spelled his last name right. He has a new book coming out this october 2011 of early photos of only Eddie and some are never before seen photos.

Zlozower but i know who you mean. anyway at least using the custom you will be that much closer IMHO. i like it for that tone because it has the cut as well as the punch and drive. the super d is great but more for the kiss, preist, maiden stuff. i dont care what the metro guys say.
even mark stopped using the dsd,he uses MCP now

I agree with you about the Dimarzio Super D.But Eddie did use that pickup, first in the white gibson les paul custom he used on the van halen 1 tour the rest you know. The duncan custom SH-5 is more open and airy sounded,I was also trying some clean boost pedals(tried many) and I went back to the BBE Boosta Grande pedal(I was trying to sell it but desided to keep it)it seems to add that "Thing" that I like and it adds it nicely.Very under rated pedal for the right application.Ive gone though pedals(overdrive-distortion stock and modded)like McDonalds goes though Big Macs.

Alot of the guys or should I say all of them in the late 70s and 80s used some type of overdrive-distortion unit.

I wonder if ed used it stock though? he claims to have swapped the magnet and had it rewound which would make it not very DSD any longer! LOL!
