Seriously, y'all need to lay off the pipe. That paranoia **** gets old and screws up the EVH discussion. It also isn't fair to
new or old members.

Anyhoo, the DiM SD and the SD SH-5 have a similar tone imprint. No, not exact - there are differences. But they
are both 14K ceramic pups.

Whenever I need a DiM SD for tone-cloning, the SH-5 fills in perfectly. For example, my Boston tone is nuts on. Iron Maiden too.
Listen to my clips if you think I'm talking outta my arse.

As far as EVH goes, I say Ed wanted the DiM SD in a real PAF package (a la Seymour) so he could tell everybody he simply had an old PAF (like a sleeper hot rod). The 1st album has ceramic bite and sizzle all over it... no way that's an A2 (a la SD '78). Of course, it helps also to use JBL D120s... The 2nd album, things changed. No more bite and sizzle. The SD '78 fits the bill there. And of course, with the Floyd, he said it thinned the tone up... so enter the Custom Custom to fix things.

Playing both the custom and super, I would never confuse the two. Both have a distinct character each their own - very distinct. Can you get close enough to mimic your favorite sounds using eq? Sure, there’s lots of ways to do that, but that’s not exactly what this discussion ever is about.

A lot of the first album was recorded with an Ibanez Destroyer. The stock pickups in that era would have been a V4 (Vintage 4) with an Alinco 5 magnet.

A lot also used super 70’s as well during that time period, and that’s the pickup most credited with the vh1 destroyer sound used in tracks like running etc... the guitars were made out of Sen, which looks like ash, but sounds closer to poplar or alder. the mighty might most likely was also used. The pickup is only one small part of a very big picture though.

I can see now why the brown sound chase has lasted to this day. As i was initially deciding between the 78 and evh franky pup, it looks like i'll have to experiment with different pups over time to see what fits to the bill to my ears. The pups are definitely not cheap and i feel fortunate to have recently scored an evh frank pup for $75 from a forum member. At least this will give me an opportunity to train my soldering skills

Re: Van Halen - VH1 tone - SD '78 vs EVH Frankenstein

For the super 70, the best you can do is shove an al8 magnet into a paf type pickup. Hell, find an Ibanez v7 for cheap and try it in that. The adjustable poles are a little different but it will be close enough to give you the flavor. The mighty nights are a little harder to find, but the super can be had all over the place. Your amp is going to make the most difference.

Re: Van Halen - VH1 tone - SD '78 vs EVH Frankenstein

I just recently got a Blackstar ID:30 to replace my Roland cube 30x. Saw a lot of great reviews where its TVP feature makes it almost indistinguishable from a tube amp. It's a 30 watt 1x12 modelling amp with a lot of the features i want including effects and ability to download "patches" from other users to mimic a certain tone.

This would be my bedroom practice amp for now until I get the EVH 5150 III half stack.

Your amp choice will make the difference, so don't stress too hard on the pickup. Pete Thorn gets a very convincing VH tone using a DiMarzio Super Distortion.
If only there was a way where we could be Pete Thorn with hardly any work involved.

A dude on youtube has some good VH patches for that amp. Check them out.

Yup his vid is one of the ones that made me go for it.

Regarding pickups, before it seemed like i had to choose between one of the 2 due to pricing but ive managed to find a guy who sold me both of his 78 and franky pup for 150 total. Not a bad deal given most used ones go for 100 to 140 each. Ill AB them soon enough.

That is a good deal on the pickups. Let us know how you like them.
