Vapor Trail Review

Re: Vapor Trail Review

I'd love a Vapor Trail Deluxe with tap tempo, 3x more delay time and expression pedal input, but it wouldn't be analog with those features. Still, it is the kind of delay I regularly use, I just almost always use more time than it has.

Re: Vapor Trail Review

Can the vapor trail be used in the FX loop of an amp? I think all demos I have seen so far it is guitar intp VT into front of amp. I got interested a few days ago in delay with modulated repeats after watching the Andy Timmons live rig rundown, that sounded great and this sunday I had the chance to try the supa-puss and liked it a lot but it is pricey because of the extra features.

It is supposed to be loop friendly. I am lazy and haven't done that yet. However, perhaps tonight I can get off my butt to try it.

Thanks, in my case I have clean, crunch and lead channels so I guess the real trick is it should not clip with full on high gain distortion, clean and overdrive should not be a problem I assume.

Re: Vapor Trail Review

My Carbon Copy works great in the loop, I don't see any the Vapor would be any different in that regard.

Ain't the Supa-Puss an analog delay with expression pedal input and tap tempo and up to 900 msec? Or is the long delay you describe what would turn it into a digital delay?

Wait, the supa puss is up to 3 seconds with tap tempo, I tested that last sunday too. Aint that pedal an analog delay then?

The Supa Puss is an analog bucket brigade delay, but controlled digitally. You can get 3 seconds of delay by using tap tempo, but the overclocking causes severe ring modulatoresque sounds (which are kinda groovy actually).
Got one when they first came out over here. Great sounding unit, with lots of versatility and fantastic sounding modulation.

Re: Vapor Trail Review

Yeah, as you extend the time on an analog delay, the sound goes bonkers. What I wan't isn't all that possible, and is covered by other digital pedals. But hey, I've done super long delays (10 seconds?) with reel-to-reel recorders and tape going around chair legs in a large room. That's analog, right? And only slightly impractical.

Re: Vapor Trail Review

gotta use cherrywood chairs man. oak is too tubby and maple loses too much warmth

Well, in that case maybe the Vapor Trail delux should be a mix of analog base tone on top of crystal clean extra long digital delay with stereo and tap tempo? I would rather call it the cyborg vapor trail :P I mean, how crazy does it sound anyway? In analog mode is would beat any emulation I guess.

Re: Vapor Trail Review

You can make a super long analog delay, just keep stacking the BBD chips. As the length increases, the fidelity decreases, but not quite to the extent mentioned above. There are 900ms and 1100ms analog delays (pretty expensive) so a 2000ms is technically possible.

Re: Vapor Trail Review

Oh yeah, but you know, I'm looking for 8 seconds. :)

I like the idea of mixing both. Using analog until 800ms , then digital after that (modeling the analog). That would be a mess to design.

Re: Vapor Trail Review

Yes, innovation is a mess!!! Here a picture of the first transistor ever, looks ugly right?

I was thinking of that as a dual stage of delays, like analog repeats into into a crystal clear digital delay stage, then maybe you can have an 8 seconds of delay with a base of analog tone. will, maybe am completly wrong on that idea.

Back to the vapor trail, I am really interested on trying one soon. I have really come to appreciate analog delay sound recently, this weekend I tried the MXR CC, MXR CC Brigth and the Boss DM2w. The Boss DM2w really blew my mind.

Re: Vapor Trail Review

I am not sure..I only owned the Deja Vu for a short while, so I don't know.
In other news, I was scaring the neighborhood cats with the Vapor Trail today. Spinning the time knob with a looper and overdrive in the the loop of the Vapor Trail. Kind of sounded like throwing ball bearings in a garbage disposal. Fun!

Re: Vapor Trail Review

that makes me want to put my deja vu with tons of modulation in the loop of the vapor trail

Re: Vapor Trail Review

I've been wanting to try one of these, but I would be hard pressed to take my Carbon Copy off of my board. It's been there for ~8 years.

Carbon Copy is good but based on several comparison on YouTube and listening with my high end headphones the VT has a clearer sound. The CC seems to dull the sound a little in the top end.
