Versatile PAF-type pickups for Les Paul?

Re: Versatile PAF-type pickups for Les Paul?

I think you have to check the Duncan Custom (Gary Holt of Exodus used it), or the Custom8.

The Seth and Ants are twice as good for richness & character, but not metal.

akira takasaki of Loudness circa the Thunder in the East years used the A2P. Check out the tune Crazy Nights. Does it need to be tighter than that? Cuz its a very expressive pickup (ex: Sweet Child o Mine)

Is it me or does everyday someone say i want a pickup for classic rock & blues, occasionally some metal? Someone needs to market a solution- like a hybrid with a pullpot that adds a ceramic magnet, or a tighter wind, or output/ active boost.

I don't know why you're not listening to Dominus, especially since he has the correct answer.

I have a Custom in my ibby and it's MASSIVE. It made my Saber incredibly fat and I love it there but it doesn't really sound PAFish to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for a metal-voiced PU that can do blues. I'm looking for a low output PU that's tight enough for fast metal rhythms. The Custom is somewhere in between but definitely more on the metal side and I don't want to turn my Tokai into a metal monster (yet).

Btw: I play through a Powerball and soon will get a Fulltone Fulldrive and perhaps an EP Booster so it shouldn't be a problem to get the heaviest tones out of pretty much anything. The only thing I worry about is the tightness.

PAF Pros......listen to Jason Suecoff's tones, that's what he uses......

Taken into consideration

IMO, if you have 59 in mind for bridge, get a Pearly Gates neck. A bit more woofy mids for a standout fat lead tone.

Re: Versatile PAF-type pickups for Les Paul?

it seems to me that a lot of music that is played having that paf sound (blues old rock) is usually in the neck position. most metal and hard rock is in the bridge position. so it seems to me that a guitar loaded with a high output in the bridge and a paf in the neck is versatile. so a guitar with a custom and 59 should be extremely versatile. but if you insist on paf styled buckers to handle gain and stay relatively tight 59b 59n is probably your best bet. even though i have never tried it i have heard great things about the jazz bridge for metal. alex scholnick(sp?) from testament uses a jazz bridge and a 59n in his heritage.

I am going to be a little different and suggest the `screamin demon. Although some will debate this, I think it definitely has a PAF vibe, is very dynamic and you will never have to worry about tightness. Want more jam from the `demon? Slam an A8 magnet in there.

Why don't you do us all a favor and buy the PATB-1, which Rich Ward uses. Then report back with a full tonal description, then I can decide if I want one or not without having to spend any money.

Depends on the guitar. As a huge blues fan, I'd say that the majority of HB's are with the bridge PU, and the majority of Strats are with the neck or middle. Of course there's plenty of guys that do it the other way.

I got an A4 PATB-1N and an A8 PATB-3.

I'll report back in January when I get my Mayones back from the luthier for a MAJOR mod.

HTH,

HTH,

Hey, Pepe. Haven't talked to you in a while. Hope everything's going well.

Anyways, enough with the pleasantries. Let's talk pickups. :D

Have you had any experience with the PATB-1 bridge? I just have interest because it sounds like a tone I'd be interested in. Right now, I'm sticking with your own personal favorite in the bridge, although somehow I committed heresy and swapped an Alnico 2 into the neck for the A4 I had there before. What do you think of the PATB-1 bridge?

Re: Versatile PAF-type pickups for Les Paul?

I have a friend that acts just like you. He asks for advice, then questions my opinion for a really long time until he convinces himself that I am right. I think you should try a screaming demon as well. It seems to fit the bill, and if it isn't what you want, mag swap it until it is. Once you have it almost nailing the tone you want, but you still want to tweak it, report back and we will give you advice on further mods. Don't forget to adjust height and EQ :)

Re: Versatile PAF-type pickups for Les Paul?

Any of the three that I mentioned in any position work fine. My personal favorite would be Demon bridge, PG neck. Clarity, articulation, balls, great EQ.

Want more guts in the bridge?...A8(= "Demon8")!

Re: Versatile PAF-type pickups for Les Paul?

Thank you all for the suggestions! I think I'll try the '59 in the bridge and the PG in the neck. The A5 magnet in that '59 should give me the tightness and punch I'm after without sacrificing too much of that vintage mojo and the PG's mids and treble should work fine for leads. If I'll need a bit more in the bridge position, I'll try the Demon or even the Custom.

If you 'need more' in the bridge, try an A8 in the '59B first. That'll give you more horsepower.

Re: Versatile PAF-type pickups for Les Paul?

The PG in the neck is just about as good as you can get. '59 in the bridge is also very good. I ended up putting in an A8...I wanted a bit more output from it, but mainly I wanted more mids and a little less highs. The A8 worked wonders.
