Versatile!!!

Which, in your opinion, is the most versatile guitar out there with stock pups? I've always been a Gibson man myself, but my younger brother (age 12) is getting into guitar but loves a wide range of music. He's really into metal, but also loves classic rock and blues. I want to buy him a guitar without having to swap out the pups that will give him an "all around" good sound with all styles of music. Hes just starting out, so he won't know his right feel, but hey, I didn't either when I started playing. I don't much worry about the feel of the guitar, I get accustomed to it... I think I'm just going to buy him one of the Line 6 amps so I can save some money without buying him a combo with effects on the side, so what do you all think? I was thinking a Schecter Hellraiser. 81/85 stock pups, not too bad of a bluesy sound considering the pups if you roll the volume and tone knobs back, metal of course, and classic rock... I'm thinkin he can find a good sound with the Line 6 but I just wanted to get some opinions. Price is no option. On the other hand, I'm looking for an ADA MP-1 preamp for myself. If anyone knows where I can find one in decent condition (I would have it modded and refurbished right away) let me know!

Re: Versatile!!!

I'd say that sounds like a pretty sweet rig for a beginner, much better than my strat pack that I started with. I'd also recommend an agile lp with emgs, or any agile for that matter, you can always duncanize it later. One thing to remember is that as a nood, your bro isn't gonna know the difference between good or bad tone for a while, at least until he can play halfway decent. When I was starting, as with most noobs, I didn't really notice how bad my tone was b/c I was focusing so hard on my playing.

Re: Versatile!!!

I would say a HSS strat is the best, especially if you can find Lone star strat :-))) it had stock pearly gates hum, and it is really hard to beat tex specials SC for blues and stuff ....

Re: Versatile!!!

To me one of the most versatile guitars is a Les Paul with out of phase humbucker pickups. Those tend to cost a lot of money these days.

A nice Agile version should Rock though, and if you don't like the pickups, you saved enough money that swapping for a good set shouldn't be out of the question

Re: Versatile!!!

For amp also try out the roland cube and vox valvetronix for him. Otherwise nice thing you are doing to your brother thumbs up for you!

Yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of any of the Line 6 Spiders that I've ever played (though their much more expensive vettas are nice). If the Vox Valvetronix were my first amp, I would never even had the urge to switch or buy another one, its great.

For guitar - Agile Les Pauls I hear are quite good, but you could also go the route of Mexican HSS strat, so no matter what music he likes, he'll be able to play it on it.

Re: Versatile!!!

IMO a LP with Jimmy Page wiring is the best... but that's because I like the thick sound.

I think you should have him listen to single coils and humbuckers. If he likes both then you can't beat an HSS strat IMO.

That's what I did when I was buying my first electric. I found out that I liked the humbucker sound way more than single coils. That hasn't changed today.

Re: Versatile!!!

You should consider the weight, Agile LP is not exactly a good thing for a kid`s back. I`d get a lighter guitar for him.

I wanted to recommend a Washburn Idol cause it`s **** good and comes with duncans and buzz feiten, but it`s also **** heavy for a kid.

I would search for a good SG type axe, or a Strat. Can`t go wrong with that.

Re: Versatile!!!

+1 to the JP LP or HSS Strat. My first guitar was a HSS Ibanez strat-like guitar, it did me well. Depending on his musical tastes, a HH or HSH might be a little more versatile. If he likes the neck SC tone a la Hendrix and SRV, then he needs the single, if it's more straight up rock and metal the HB is better (especially if they use a 5-way to get different options)

Re: Versatile!!!

Another vote for a HSS or HSH strat. They're not expensive and very flexible. I even like the way the stock pups sound in the MIM's. And if he doesn't like 'em later when his skills advance, he can easily upgrade.

Re: Versatile!!!

Fat Strats (Hum/Sing/Sing) are the ultimate guitars whether you're just starting or a seasoned veteran. I set mine up so the neck single coil is really smoothe and clean, the middle one is closer to the strings for more twang, spank and output (to make it sound as bridge-like as possible) and the bridge humbucker for, y'know humbucker stuff.
