Vertical 2x12's

I know you can obviously put a regular 2x12 on it's side but then you won't be able to put the head on top. Anyway, what I am trying to say is, would a vertical 2x12 get you close to a 4x12 sound or would you just be better off with a 4x12?

Re: Vertical 2x12's

I think it's safe to say any 2x12 will not sound like a 4x12 live or duing recording unless you close-mic it.

and still, it would probably just be close and not a replica.

Re: Vertical 2x12's

Of course you can put a 2x12 on its side and put a head on top. I've done a few hundred gigs that way. In most club situations a 2x12 is more than enough to throw your guitar off the stage. In conjunction with a mic to the FOH speakers if necessary things will be fine. I've played small club stages with 15 watts and a 2x12 with no help needed from the PA.

Re: Vertical 2x12's

A 2x12 with very efficient drivers, in many cases, will be just as loud or louder than a 4x12 with less efficient drivers.

But it will still not sound like a 4x12 in-room.

4x12s are a beautiful mess -- they have lots of power and low end but they can really overload a small room in a bad way, can be incredibly beamy, and deafen anyone unlucky to be caught directly in front of one facing the front.

Unless you are picky about cosmetics theres no reason you couldn't. I had a Mesa Vertical 2x12 that I used with a Rect-O-Verb Head. My ROV sat on the edge of the cab just on the inside edge of the heads rubber feet. With that being said it is doable but the head will have a bit of overhang on each side.

I think 2x12s sound better than 4x12s --- yeah, I said it.

I gigged a vertical 2x12 for years, sounds great.

I have heard that the Mills Acoustics 2x12 Cabs sound very 4x12ish. They use a special kind of construction that allows the cab to project better. Their 2x12 is a horizontal design though. Linky...... http://millsacoustics.com/212B.html :)
