Anyone knows the tone characteristics of both cabs?
what would your prefer and why? :reporter:

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

It seems that the verticals project better than the horizontals. The horizontals seem to have a tighter sound though. I think it would be cool to run one of each. I have a Mesa 2x12 Recto Cab and have thought about buying one of the verticals someday. :) I've always wondered what they would sound like together. Not to mention it could be cool to have the option of both depending on what kind of sound you want. I have heard of people turning their horiz on its side helps it project better but I have not tried it myself however.

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

I'd go horizontal. There's something about a vertical cab that I just don't like. I'm sure the sound is almost the same, the vertical might seem to project more because it's in your face, but..

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

Having played both, I'll stick with my verticle cab. The top baffle both tilts back a bit, and has a removable panel on the back to run half the cab open back.

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

The vertical is easier to hear due to the speaker being higher. I would say that's about the only difference, IME.

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

I would be afraid the with the vertical cabinet that it or the amp head would fall over.
Seeing the the center of gavity is higher.

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

I run two semi open back 1 x 12's. They definitely sound better vertical to my ear.

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

Just get a 2x12 and put feet on one side. Now you have both.

SCIENCE!

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

the tonality of 1 2x12" is different or similar than 2 1x12"?

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

ok, whatever... i don't have time to discuss stupidity... just stay out of this thread.

again, anyone can tell me the sound advantages of having 1 cab of 2x12" instead 2 cabs of 1x12"?? thanks.

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

I like vertical 2x12s. I like the look and I like having the sound coming from a location north of my ankles. But I have no problem with horizontal cabs, really. Some of my favorite combo amps are horizonatal 2x12s.

The only real limitation I see with vertical cabs is that the vast majority of them (that I have seen) are closed back. I much prefer open back designs in general, for the sort of music I tend to play.

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

i use to run 2 1x12" ... i loved the stereo spread i got from putting them on their own tilt back stands

but it was a pain hauling two separate cabs, stands, cables, etc ....

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

I always liked Mesa's 2x12 vertical slant design.

Mesa's half-closed/half-open design was popular for a bit before rectos hit... My only problem with that design is that you're trying to get two different sounds out of one power amp channel at the same time, that compliment each other. And most of the speakers that I like for that sort of thing do better closed-back, or are a bit lower power handling than I'd like for a cabinet. They don't appear to make them anymore...
