Oh yeah! Clapton used one for most of the Layla album.

I can't believe that blackface Deluxe Reverb is going for that much! Sometimes, I put out wanted ads in Los Angeles, looking for things like that. That Ebay price reminds me I've got to scour LA for blackface amps, since there's no shortage of guitar players here.

Too bad I had to pass up that Carvin pickup loaded vintage Gibson! I forgot to check how much it went for. :laugh2:

Isn't that something? Over $2600 right now! That's just to much...you can find them for alot less.

That one's mint...I'd want one I could play out and bang up a little and that I could do some circuit tweaks on without devaluing it.

i bet that champ ends up over 300. If it ended at like 190 i would probably snag it, retube it, new speaker, and then see what it has.

I thought Clapton used a Tweed Champ for Layla...is the circuit the same?

That's great! Glad it found a good home. Really, I have about all the amps I'll ever need for the rest of my life! I found the Vibrolux Reverb I've always wanted a month or two ago...I'm set!

It's fun turning some of you other guys onto what seem to me be some good deals.

Somebody ought to grab that Bandmaster Reverb in post #1 and do some blackface mods on it and maybe tweak it for less negative feedback and replace the tone caps with a pair of .02's for a '59 Bassman or Plexi Marshall tone. I'd rather have one of those than a Bassman head: real spring reverb in the BR and a much more manageable output!

I knew a guy years ago with one of these little amps. That amp sounded sweet. I've wanted one ever since, but I've not been able to find one. Then I see this particular auction(which has obviously ended) and I want to kick myself for not checking around on eBay more. The seller was in Virginia no less. Oh well. Cool little amp!

You know, this is the time of year to buy a used amp or guitar.

People are kind of in a buying modd but tapped because of the holidays.

So if you have a few hundred bucks stashed away, now's the time.

At least that's been my experience. It's hard to get top dollar this time of year...though that $2600 Deluxe Reverb is a freak!

I was surprised that I got it for only $172, everytime I find one locally it is $250+ and in much worse condition. Couldn't be happier

So Clapton used one of those to record the Layla album? How many watts are we talking, and what do they typically sell for on the used market? I love the tone he had on that album, I guess it never occured to me to look into the amps he was using. I figured it was some sort of Fender though.

Champs only have three tubes: one 6V6 output tube for about 5 watts output; one rectifier tube and one 12ax7 preamp tube. Very simple circuit!

I think the Jensen speaker that came in most blackface Champs sounds the best.

You can't really gig with them...but Layla was definately recorded with a silverface Champ according to the albums producer Tom Dowd. Maybe he wasn't the producer but he had a big part in the recording of that album. Maybe he was the engineer...I forget.

He did alot with the Allman Brothers too I think....right? :smack:

Someone posted a interview with Tom Dowd over on the Weber VST forum a few years ago and he talked about Clapton using the silverface Champ for most of that album.

It sounds like it after you know that's what it is.
